TikTok Ban Or Sell Is Still On

BEIJING - Back in April 2024, President Biden signed the bipartisan TikTok “ban or sell” bill into law. Eight months later the basic framework is still in place.

The January 19, 2025 deadline is still in effect, but the plot thickened when TikTok CEO Shou Chew met with President-elect Trump last week at Mar-a-Lago in Florida to discuss the matter.

“You know, I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok because I won youth by 34 points and there are those that say that TikTok has something to do with it,” Trump said in a press conference last week.

“After the January deadline, US app stores and internet services could face hefty fines for hosting TikTok if it is not sold,” wrote CNN reporters Collins, Cole, and Fritz in a Dec. 16 article. “The president, under the legislation, may issue a one-time extension of the deadline.”

A court ruling has upheld the ban-or-sell law on national security grounds, but CNN reporters point out that TikTok continues to fight. “Attorneys for TikTok are asking the Supreme Court to temporarily block the ban to give the company time to ask the justices to review their challenge to it,” they write. “If the justices agree, the law would, at a minimum, remain on hold until the court decides whether it will hear the case.”
