Is it time for a career move to enhance your life and plan ahead for the future?
If you live and work in the UK right now (Sept 2019) you might read this headline and think....what? Errr, hello?? Chaos…Brexit (there, I said it)…uncertainty! Is this really a good time to consider moving jobs or switching careers entirely? For some, perhaps no- there are several factors to assess- but for many others the answer is yes! Now is a great time to reflect and consider the career options available to you. Here are three reasons why:
1. Time - I’ve worked in headhunting/ recruitment in the UK for over twelve years now and I’m also a trained careers coach (since 2012). Statistically speaking, the period between mid- September up to mid-December is the busiest time for annual recruitment activity. Companies and savvy business leaders want to be able to entice high-performing, talented individuals straight after the summer break, in order for new employees to get their feet under the desk, hit the ground running and gear up for business activity with busy times ahead into the new year.
If you wait to explore the opportunities open and available to you around January/ February time, you might miss out on that “golden ticket”. Worse still, your ‘dream job’ may even pass you by. There is little harm in investing a bit of constructive time just keeping an eye on the jobs market.
2. Planning ahead - following on from time, it’s crucial to assess where you are in your career now and where you want to be in say 12-18 months. From there you can assess where you want to be in five to ten years’ from now. Meeting certain, more immediate needs in the short-term does make sense, but looking ahead and planning for the future is crucial. This is especially true if you aim to achieve specific personal and professional goals for long-term success and obtain deep-rooted satisfaction along the way.
3. Love what you do - finally, bringing things back to basics, it’s really all about loving what you do and doing it to the best of your ability. Life’s too short to waste! Love what you do and do it well! If you get true satisfaction and enjoyment from your career and if the work also rewards you accordingly to meet your personal needs, then you are in a good place. I would suggest a number of factors need to be met in order for your ‘dream job’ to be the perfect fit for you, rather than pure passion alone. It’s better to explore and know what opportunities are available to you, rather than to never know and to let compelling options simply pass you by.
