No Time For Feelings
Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that make us feel trapped. My experience this past weekend wasn't quite as dramatic as all that, but I agreed to go to a Broadway show I didn't think would be very interesting because my daughter and her friends wanted to go.
There I was, sitting for two hours in the theater and not enjoying myself very much. But then it hit me. I could actually turn this into an opportunity!
For the next hour, I was inventing in my mind my next interactive keynote presentation. I visualized pulling audience members onto the stage, creating characters for each of them, and implementing show stoppers.
Suddenly I was engaged!
How can you turn situations where you feel trapped into an opportunity?

Are you someone who thinks there is no time for feeling – you just have to get the job done?
Perhaps you worry that your emotions will overwhelm you and you’ll end up acting them out.
Regardless of why you’re not taking the time to process your feelings, understand that you are putting yourself at risk for burnout. That’s because your emotions don’t go away. They may just be hiding somewhere inside of you, but they’re in there and one of these days, the accumulation of all of those feelings can lead to serious problems.
Just when you’re stressed, frustrated, or scared and have the inclination to push your feelings down and out of sight, there is a better way.

Do you feel like you put too much effort and energy into other people's needs and not enough towards your own?
In this week’s episode of the Decode Your Burnout Podcast, we have Lora Cheadle as a guest. Lora had two major burnouts in her life. The first was when she had two young children at home, a husband who traveled often, and three grandparents in the final stages of Alzheimer's, cancer, and emphysema. The second was when she started to accomplish a lot but didn't feel fulfilled and lost motivation.
Lora shares how she took a hard look at her priorities and began to give herself more attention. By letting go of other pursuits, she was able to focus on things that were important to her—things that led her to new passions.
She also elaborates on the following tips on burnout:
- Oftentimes, burnout is not simply the result of overwork; it can be the result of betrayal.
- Too often we go after things we think we're supposed to want, but they don't actually make us happy.
- Learning how to speak up and advocate for yourself (after you have figured out what it is you want) is essential to healing burnout.

Life is full of difficult moments. No one is exempt. And then we're told to find meaning to turn our feelings around about those events.
Andrew Solomon debunks the myth about this idea. According to him, it's not about making meaning, it's about forging meaning and incorporating it into your new identity.
His TED talk may well have been called Trauma to Triumph. Check it out here.

We've all heard about different ways to manage stress, recover from and even prevent burnout. But what are you doing to maintain your results and be reminded that you're slipping?
That's the exact question that my friend, Magdalena Pire Schmidt, asked herself when she was burning out at her corporate job.
So she decided to do something about it, not only to help herself, but help everyone!
She came up with this idea that if we identify key wellness indicators (which she's nicknamed as KIWIs), we can stay on track.
Currently, her KIWIs project is an early stage startup. She is looking for early adopters who want to prevent burnout.
This is for you if:
🥝 You’ve experienced burnout in the past and want to prevent it
🥝 You have ADHD (diagnosed or undiagnosed). This is likely not for you if you are deep into burnout and need to recover.
Why Kiwis? Kiwis help users detect when they are heading towards burnout and recover in time. It only takes 3 minutes once a week.
