Is it time to get ready for the new generation entering the workforce (not the one you think)
What if the new generation never ages, never tires, and only gets stronger with time?
Hey there, friends! 👋 It's Friday, and I've got a mind-bender for you.
Grab your favorite tea or coffee, mine is coffee infused with mint (I'm still missing that Peet's brew with Mint leaves from the US), and let's chat about the new generation.
It’s not Gen Z or Alpha it is “Generation AI”.
No, it’s not like the same old same old gen AI banter. I have been thinking about how this generation is rising, literally like a giant beanstalk in a fairy tale, but it’s real! The large resources that serve as its backbone, such as water and power are also real!
From AI Winter to an Exciting Summer
Remember the AI winter? That chilly period when AI growth was slow, almost like the frozen coffee left overnight.
But oh boy, did things change quickly!
Last year, we saw a spike that felt like AI had jumped from preschool to high school overnight. Suddenly, AI assistants and ChatGPT were more than just being smart - they also seemed clever!
It's like we blinked, and suddenly our smart toasters became smarter than us! (Okay, maybe not exactly, but you get the point.)
We were using gen AI to develop material faster and figure out how to solve performance, relationships, and productivity problems. And now Devin, an AI agent, can code entire projects while we still struggle to remember our passwords.
Agents even started working together. Look at what Ross Stevenson showed us about AI teamwork in an onboarding program – it's like watching the Avengers, but with algorithms! ( link below at the end of the article)
And then this morning OpenAI unveiled a new model, “The AI that thinks like a person (Ph.D. level reasoning”. You can see why it has me thinking (links at the end of the article).
I was forced into my fun place of sci-fi dreaming, wondering, "What if one day we can just live and have fun while this “Generation AI” does all the work for us?
Ok, I am going back to my coffee to wake up from this dream.
Not your average intern
This generation will enter the workforce with some significant powers and capabilities:
The Resource Competition ( Not for Talent)
This is when things turn interesting (and a little terrifying). Our AI friends need some major fuel to keep running:
We're suddenly in a race for the same resources we’ve always had, but this time it could be fierce. I don’t know but it could.
It's like competing with your own shadow – weird, right?
Not to fear, I am confident that experts are building efficient infrastructures to assist this Generation without causing an imbalance.
So, how should we prepare for our new coworkers?
1. Get to Know Them: Understand what they can do, remember that they don't age, and see how they grow stronger over time. It's like having a wonderkid intern who will never leave!
2. Learn Their Language: Immerse yourself in AI and learn its language. Play with it. Break it. Fix it. Make it your collaborative partner instead of simply offering instructions.
3. Up Your Human Skills: Focus on what makes us uniquely human – creativity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to make hilarious memes.
4. Become a Lifelong Learner: Because if AI can learn overnight, we better keep our neurons firing too!
5. Be the Ethical Compass: Someone's got to keep our AI friends moving in the right direction. Might as well be us!
Wrapping Up (Before AI Writes My Conclusion)
As we sip our (potentially AI-brewed) coffee or Masala Chai ( Tea) and mull over this new world, remember:
So, how are you feeling?
How do you envision the workforce and workplace in the next ten years? Same or different?
