Is it time to leave your comfort zone?

When I was at my first coaching certification class, my trainer and coach, Maya Marcia Wieder would often say “Get comfortable, getting uncomfortable!” When I look back on my career as an IT professional and a consultant, I can look at specific events where I took a little bit of a risk and stepped out of my comfort zone. Sometimes there was a big learning lesson (from the failure) and oftentimes there was a big breakthrough.

As consultants, we are constantly asked to perform at high levels. Many requests that we get are considered within our wheelhouse, but in our own minds those requests are outside the known and the experience. We are constantly asked to step out of our comfort zone.

Eleanor Roosevelt is often attributed to the quote “Do one thing every day that scares you.” I find this quote interesting. Mainly because it says, “every day.”   WOW!  Can you imagine the growth you would have if you were stepping out of your comfort zone every day? As an entrepreneur, I am often taking steps outside of my comfort zone and certainly many of those steps are scary.

As a younger consultant, I was asked to visit a company that had been working on their business application (an ERP) implementation for a few years. For some reason, they would not pull the trigger to “Go Live.”  At the time, I was a technical resource, specifically a developer. I was positioned as a User Acceptance Test (UAT) expert. This assignment was a big stretch outside of my wheelhouse and certainly out of my comfort zone. The anticipation leading up to the visit built each day for about a week. The 2-hour airplane ride was not easy. When I got onsite, I met with the CEO and CFO. They explained their situation. I asked to interview the different departments. I found most of the groups were friendly and wanted to get to a live phase. What I found was that there was one person holding up the entire process. He had a legitimate concern that the organization had not thoroughly tested the system and reviewed the data. When I did more digging about their testing practice, I found that it was very ad-hoc and not systemized or quantified. When I shared this with the CFO and CEO, we developed a plan for the company to go through their work streams to develop a solid UAT process that would satisfy the one individual. When I checked in with the customer a few weeks later, they were executing the plan and were making progress. They eventually pulled the trigger and took their organization through the last step and went live on their new system.

I certainly was not comfortable going into the situation, but I learned a tremendous amount of my own abilities and consulting. If I had turned down the assignment, I do not know how long it would have taken me to move from a developer role to the functional and project management roles.

When a stretch assignment comes your way… say, “Yes!” If you fail, you will learn a lot about the situation and you will be more prepared for the next stretch assignment. If you say, Yes and it works out to be a positive activity, you will learn, build self-esteem, and confidence. You will become a better consultant!

Do you need to take an uncomfortable step? “Get comfortable, getting uncomfortable!”
