Tips for a Standout CV
Following our previous article on ‘Strategies for Navigating the Post-Graduate Job Market’, I wanted to delve into another crucial aspect of the job search – creating an exceptional CV and cover letter. Hiring managers sift through 100’s of CV’s every week, so throughout this article, I am going to highlight some of the more unconventional tips that could really help you stand out from the crowd!
- Formatting matters
Ensure your CV is easy to read by using clear headings, bullet points and a consistent font. A well organised document will make it easier for hiring managers and recruiters to quickly grasp your skills and qualifications. Also mind your punctuation, ensure everything is well written, correct punctuation enhances readability. A standard format looks along the lines of: Name and Contact Info, Personal Profile, Education & Academic Achievements, Work Experience’ etc.
- Showcase your personality!!!!!
Injecting personality into your CV and Cover Letter can set you apart. Instead of generic phrases, share personal anecdotes or experiences that highlight your character and passion for the field you are applying to. Make it interesting, not robotic.
- Quantify your achievements
When highlighting achievements, use data to substantiate your claims. For instance, if you’ve set up your own business at university, share specifics such as revenue generated, percentage growth, or any other measurable success metrics.
Show the impacts of your actions. How did your efforts contribute to the success of a project or organisation? Concrete examples make your achievements more compelling.
- Customisation is key
You would be shocked at how many people apply to my job roles and then don’t even know what they applied for… Avoid sending generic applications!! Tailor your CV and Cover Letter to each position you apply to, to emphasise the skills and experiences most relevant to the job description. Don’t flood employers with unnecessary information. Think quality not quantity.
- Leverage key words
In the world of AI optimising your application is essential. Many employers use tracking systems to screen CVs. You should integrate industry-specific keywords relevant to the job you’re applying for to increase the likelihood of your CV going through the initial screening. Now with this being said, please do not get ChatGPT to write your entire CV for a specific job description, because again, we CAN TELL and it shows a lack of personality and customisation / overall effort.
A CV and cover letter are the first impression you make on a potential employer. So, it is important to dedicate time creating an application that really reflects your skills and achievements. Your application should mirror your potential. If you are wanting me to look at your CV and give you some tips feel free to reach out directly and I will get back to you ASAP 😊
