John Locke: The Man Who Shaped American Ideals

 

Much of what we take for granted today originated with John Locke, a man who was born in 1632 in a small village in Somerset England. He studied to be a doctor at Oxford but reached is notoriety as a political theorist.

Locke developed three basic principles. (1) All men are created equal. (2) There are certain basic rights that all men have that exist independent of government. (3) Governments are created to protect those rights.

Sound familiar? It should. They’re in the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson relied heavily on Locke’s ideas when he wrote it.

Let’s examine them one at a time.

·         All Men Are Created Equal: Locke’s philosophy was simple. Humans were created equal by God, all part of the same species and are, therefore, equal – not in worth or results, but in rights. That means that a king is not superior to a commoner. The kin is human and so is the commoner, meaning that one is equal to the other. This is commonplace now, but in 1690 it was considered drastic.

Here's how Jefferson put it: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

·         There are certain basic rights that all men have that exist independent of government: Locke contended that man’s natural state was to be free. “The natural state of man,” he wrote, “is to be free from any superior power on earth.” He believed that we are born with liberty – regardless of your class in society – to think and act as we want, provided we hurt no one else.

 

·         Government exists to protect those rights. Governments exist, Locke believed, to protect an individual’s freedoms. He abhorred any notion that would give the government the power to eliminate that liberty. If governments can’t provide those protections, or if it exploits its power, it doesn’t deserve to exist.

Unfortunately, Locke’s ideas today are being rejected by far too many Americans. They think human beings are not created equal—that we should treat people differently based on their group identity. That is, on race, creed or gender. And they believe that government should have almost unlimited power.
