What does a 'day in the life' look like for a Graduate Valuer at the Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development ? What key tasks do you handle?

No two days are the same! My role encompasses a wealth of variety, and as part of a regional team, we cover large areas, evaluating diverse property types. Some days are centred around office tasks, involving valuation roll maintenance, investigating sales data and conducting in-depth sales analyses. Meanwhile, other days involve inspecting various land regions, spanning from K’gari to Durong and a vast array of regional and urban areas.

What have been some standout or interesting moments or encounters that have been particularly fulfilling as a Graduate Valuer in your journey so far?

I've had numerous memorable experiences, finding fulfillment in the diverse range of work and exposure to various asset classes in different environments and locations. From inspecting properties in Central Queensland, exploring K’gari, and venturing on trips to South Burnett - each opportunity has been uniquely fulfilling. It's amazing to explore different parts of Queensland, especially the rural spots. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had opportunity to travel to such cool places in Queensland, some of which I might never have explored in my lifetime if it weren't for my role with the department.

As you prepare for the 2024 land valuations to be issued by later this month, what specific projects or tasks have you been working on recently within the department?

Recently, I have been assisting with client valuations projects for the Department of Education. It has been very interesting to see the wide variety of works undertaken by the team. Furthermore, it’s been fantastic to gain a deeper understanding of the role of annual valuations to the Queensland economy.

For those interested in joining Resources as a Graduate Valuer, what skills or qualities do you think are most important for success in this role?

Firstly, adaptability is key - the market is constantly changing, and keeping on top of shifts in the market is crucial to succeed as a Valuer. Like all roles, professional development and a desire to expand your skills is important- constantly striving for improvement and aiming to get 1% better each day. Furthermore, the role of a Valuer involves constantly analysing data, therefore strong research skills and attention to detail are essential attributes for ensuring accurate and comprehensive assessments.
