 Growing up, it was all about proper manners and kindness.

These virtues resonated throughout everything in life!

 My siblings and I were taught these values from day one. We had a loving and supportive family, enjoying many of life's pleasures. My father's hard work as a renowned surgeon provided these luxuries, setting an example I followed throughout my life.

 

From a young age, I knew that working harder and longer than the next guy was key to success. Oh , and let’s not forget working smarter which came later in life.

Summers at our beach house in Cape Cod and winters skiing in northern New England brought fantastic memories.

Living in New England, you either use the winter, or it uses you! Across the street from our house was a beautiful small pond where my love for hockey began—a sport that has remained influential throughout my life. Coaching, playing continually till this day and watching thousands of games. Likely due to my Nova Scotian ancestors.

 

Remember the days of going home when the streetlights came on? No cell phones, no internet—just pure, simple times. Our main home was in a city, the second largest in New England, which brought life in the fast lane.

 

As I moved into middle school, I made friends with older boys. We had a tight-knit crew of neighborhood friends but ventured into other neighborhoods seeking excitement and inevitably danger. Fortunately, I realized early on that the party scene wouldn't get me anywhere. Overcoming bad vices built a strong foundation of willpower that lasted for many years. My quest to change the standard view on managing health care came from this ability to adapt and grow stronger through adversity.

 Watching my father get up in the middle of the night for emergency surgeries, working long hours, was extremely admirable. I knew I wouldn't achieve success if I stayed on the path I was on.

 

My mother was another major influence in my life. I learned from my father how to treat women with kindness and respect. My mother demanded perfect manners and wouldn't accept anything less than respect and kindness in her home. She was my biggest advocate during my teenage years, her dedication and love helping me through difficult times.

 

High school came, and my grades were average at best. So, I ventured into junior college to get things started. From day one, I made valuable lifelong friendships and learned the dedication and hard work needed to succeed. Always working one or two jobs while attending college was tough. We were taught early on that we needed to earn money for anything valuable we wanted. At age ten, I washed windows to buy my first minibike. That was my first venture into employment, teaching me the value of hard work. At age twelve, I shoveled snow with a friend to earn money. I was always the one knocking on doors, never shy. Hey, No one is going to give you luxuries in life so we go out and work hard.

 

College brought years of great friendships, fun, and learning experiences. For those considering not going to college, you'd miss out. There, I met a woman who would become my future wife, and we had a fantastic son, Anthony Junior. Although the marriage didn't last due to an obsession with drinking, I gained my beloved son and ended my drinking phase 26 years ago.

 

At age 25, after graduating from college, I began my consulting journey. Working for New England Mutual Life Insurance Company taught me how to deal with different personalities and make people comfortable. There training on dealing with multiple personalities was legendary.  Naturally I gravitated towards employee benefits. Not fond of sitting around a kitchen table at night, this was all daytime work, and I got to meet influential people. I was fortunate to have a great mentor, a kind, funny, and successful man in health and benefits.

 

Feeling that bad things only happen to others is a mistake. Life can change in an instant. One day, I found myself facing a significant challenge: a sudden health crisis within my family. This experience opened my eyes to the importance of comprehensive healthcare coverage and propelled me toward my true calling—helping businesses reduce healthcare costs while improving benefits for members. You MUST be an advocate for your health, believe me, I learned this early.

 

I remember the first time I encountered a CFO frustrated with the annual health plan renewal nightmare. Endless spreadsheets, minimal savings, and the nagging feeling of overpaying for subpar plans—I've seen it all. I knew there had to be a better way.

The journey hasn't been easy, but every challenge has made me stronger and more determined to make a difference. From early mornings and late nights watching my father's dedication to overcoming personal obstacles and professional setbacks, each experience has shaped my approach to healthcare benefits.
