Top 3 things to consider when deciding to move to the U.S. to start a business.

Mark Twain once said, "The secret to getting ahead is getting started."

When you have a dream of changing your entire life by moving to a different country and launching your business there, it can feel very overwhelming, and it can be hard to know where to begin. The challenges can seem so huge, you might be tempted to stay where you are simply because it's comfortable and familiar.

You have a choice. You can stay where you are, or you can grow.

I understand your dreams, because I am an immigrant to the United States, and have started tech startups. I learned a lot in that process, and I founded a women-owned, women-run law firm to help others live their dreams.

When you consider making this transformative life decision, here are the top 3 things you should consider.

  1. Where do you want to live?

Congratulations on deciding you would like to live in the U.S. and fulfill your own American dream! It's exciting, but where should you go exactly? It's a big country, after all. Maybe you have dreams of sunny California, or maybe you want to live in New York City. You should live where you will be happy, but should not just consider your family's needs. Think about your business needs, too. Not every state taxes businesses the same way, and state laws can make a big difference.

2. How will you define your company in the U.S.?

This may seem obvious, but you should be thoughtful about your company's structure and culture when you launch. Remember: U.S. culture is different from your country of origin. Maybe you will need to hire staff in the U.S. who are familiar with Western markets, culture, or regulations. Maybe you have an existing company and want to launch it in the U.S., and will need to restructure it to comply with U.S. regulations. Keep in mind, growth might require change.

3. What will make you happy?

I am a big believer in that most central of U.S. tenets: the pursuit of happiness. It can feel scary to put yourself out there, uproot your whole life (and maybe even your family's), and really go for it. The truth is, life is too short to remain stuck if you aren't happy. Sometimes you have to take a risk to really live.

At 2nd.law, we are here to help you take the plunge. Be happy; you deserve it!
