Top 6 Nutrients for Strengthening your Immune System
Beta-carotene- is an antioxidant and a precursor of vitamin A. Our body will convert beta-carotene to vitamin A when it is needed to help protect against the nasties. Vitamin A helps regulate the immune system by keeping the skin and tissues healthy in the mouth, stomach, intestines, and respiratory system. Vitamin A is found in plant foods that are orange or red in colour, such as carrots, sweet potatoes, capsicum/bell peppers, and also broccoli, spinach, eggs or products that are fortified with vitamin A.
Vitamin C- supports the immune system by stimulating the formation of antibodies. Vitamin C is found in citrus fruits such as oranges, mandarins and grapefruit, berries, capsicum/bell peppers, tomato, and broccoli.
Vitamin D- is crucial for maintaining healthy immune regulation and inflammatory responses. Vitamin D can activate killer cells (also known as T cells) in the immune system. If there is a lack of Vitamin D in the blood, T cells will remain in a ‘dormant state’, and the presence of infection or pathogens will not be detected. Foods that provide Vitamin D include: fatty fish, egg yolk, and dairy products fortified with vitamin D. Regular sun exposure for around 10-15mins (care to be sun smart and avoid peak sun exposure times) a few times a week is the easiest and most natural way to get enough vitamin D.
Vitamin E- is another powerful antioxidant that can neutralise free radicals. Vitamin E helps protect the cell membrane from harm and maintain normal physiological functions (such as producing white blood cells, which play an important role in the immune system). Vitamin E is found in healthy fats such as avocado, nuts and seeds.
Zinc- is an essential micronutrient for regulating the immune system. It helps to fight off invading bacteria and viruses and promotes wound healing. Zinc absorption is better from animal sources such as seafood, lean meats, and milk, but can also be found in tofu, lentils, whole grain products, nuts and seeds.
Turmeric- is a well-known spice and a member of the ginger family. The active ingredient of turmeric is curcumin. Curcumin acts as a phytochemical that has powerful antioxidant properties and used to promote health and wellbeing.
