Top Guide Posts for this week discuss feelings, striking out and strategic marketing!
How did you feel about the interview?
After being a recruiter for over 15 years, I have come to realize that the best indicator of interview success is how one feels immediately after the interview.
You may have a great resume
You may have a stellar education.
You may have brilliant interview skills
But if you come away feeling anything other than positively energized, chances are it didn't go well.
Conversely, if you feel positively energized, it is most likely the interviewer felt that as well.
Energies feed energies!
So the next time you are going to interview, do something that makes you happy and positively energized immediately before
- Sing in your car (nobody is listening)
- Dance in a vacant room (nobody is watching)
- Give yourself a pep talk (no critics are here)
By bringing these positive vibes with you into the interview you will have a far greater chance of success.

Crowd Strikeout?
"We don't use recruiters for product manager roles. After all, how much damage can one product manager do?"
This is something I have often heard from hiring managers.
And then, last Friday happened.
Global mayhem caused by a botched software update. And yes, approving a software update is a key responsibility of a product manager at a software company.
So, let's take a look at some of the damage that caused.
- The company responsible for the outage, Crowdstrike, lost $11 billion in market cap overnight.
- Thousands of delayed and cancelled flights.
- Billions in productivity losses.
Recommended by LinkedIn
- Untold numbers of delayed surgical procedures.
- And much, much more!
So the next time someone says "How much damage can a single product manager do?", just respond "Ask the folks at Crowdstrike".

What does a Strategic Marketer do?
Recruiter: "Are you interested in a Marketing Communications Manager job?"
Me: "No, I am in Strategic Marketing.
"Recruiter: "What does a Strategic Marketer do?"
Me: click
This is why I became a recruiter. I realized that recruiters didn't know what the marketing function does. So they have no idea who is good at what.
Here's what a strategic marketers does:
A strategic marketer is responsible for developing and implementing marketing strategies
A strategic marketer typically begins by conducting market research
Strategic marketers are also responsible for measuring the success of their marketing efforts
Overall, a strategic marketer plays a critical role in helping a company achieve its business objectives by developing and executing effective marketing strategies.
Chris Gustanski – Founder and Lead Talent Guide
Chris is a classically trained marketer with over a decade of executive search experience. He moved into recruiting because he was someone that was frequently recruited and was tired of recruiters hounding him to consider roles they didn’t understand, and he wasn’t interested in pursuing. He was determined to disrupt Executive Search to deliver a better result and experience for companies and the commercial talent they need. After over a decade seeing the dysfunction in executive search firms large and small, he formed Due North Executive Search in collaboration with his wife Amie.
