Top Reasons To Work For A Start-up

In today’s work landscape, many have experienced working in a start-up or a similar environment & everyone has their own story to share. While there are also those who have given it a thought multiple times but couldn’t jump the start-up stride. We are more than happy to share our thoughts on this landscape & have listed down some of the top reasons why people need to explore opportunities of working with a start-up or early stage organisation

Start-ups that are well structured with a solid base of customers & projects at hand, always tend to grow faster. This in return, results in personal growth of each individual associated with the organisation. Start-ups are always looking forward to upskill their existing team members in order to take on new challenges. This means they would want their existing team members to learn new technologies & add the latest skills that are in demand by way of certifications & other learning methodologies

Faster decisions & quick actions in daily tasks makes every discussion a unique experience for each team member associated with the organisation. When the pressure is high, decisions are fast but this also enables one to take risks & see through it. We all fail at some point because of the mistakes we make with those hight risks decisions, but eventually it makes one more wiser with those learnings

At start-ups, the teams are usually smaller & this means higher responsibility as well as accountability for each individual. A fairly simple organisation structure with flat hierarchies i.e. most team members working at parallel levels ensures minimal supervision & gives an opportunity to work with greater focus. Smaller teams also empower team members to work closely with the organisation leaders & be a part of decision making process. This also creates a lot of room for innovative ideas & suggestions each day

The more opportunities you get to be a part of a core team, the more your performance is highlighted. At start-ups, every small success gets celebrated with credits & recognition of team members involved in the process of success, this proves to be very motivating for an individual

Milestones are achieved together while you are always surrounded by a team of equally passionate people around you. Even if there are any missed deadlines or disappointing feedbacks from clients, the entire team is together in this. Being close to the entire ecosystem, gives more visibility to the results or feedbacks that are pertaining to the team's & individual’s performance. While working on a project, if Plan A does not work then there are multiple plans in pipeline which can be bought in motion in no time, thus making an individual more adaptable to changes & becoming more tolerant to changing work environment

As you get an opportunity to work closely with leadership team, you are always aligned to the organisations’ values & goals. At start-up level of organisations, most employees are responsible for important functions making them the stake holders in respective areas. This opens the chances of being involved in organisation’s P&L and adds the responsibility to ensure the end goals are met. That makes it operating like an entrepreneur while working as an employee. Well, this is something that cannot be experienced at most bigger organisations.

Everyone loves a little flexibility in work routine, well if you are able to achieve greater results it doesn’t really matter whether you worked for 9 hours for 5 days a week or just couple of hours each day in a week. Start-ups are tolerant to flexible work environment as they are more keen in getting the results without getting too involved in their employee’s routines

This is just our take on how it feels to work in a start-up & the situations mentioned here are on the basis of our own personal experiences that we encountered while working for an early stage IT services start-up. Not everyone might have a similar experience as we did & some of them would have their own good or bad stories to tell, we are more than happy to hear those out

We would like to summarise this by saying one should definitely look for an opportunity to work in a star-up or early stage organisation once in a professional career.
