Top Seven BIM Projects Across the World

During the design, build, and operational processes, BIM is utilized to create and manage data. BIM combines multidisciplinary data to produce detailed digital representations that can be maintained in real-time on an open cloud platform. There are several examples of BIM in action in some of the largest and most complicated construction projects of the world like Crossrail, New Istanbul Airport, Baku National Stadium in Baku, Azerbaijan, etc.  Take a look at the top 7 BIM projects from different sectors.

1. Infrastructure Project - Randselva Bridge in Norway is the world’s longest bridge built entirely without drawings — not even a single PDF.

a). IFC files communicate 95% of all information, including over 200 pour phases, to the contractor, saving time and reducing errors.

b). About 70% of all the pieces were modeled using parametric design, which allowed for easy revisions and alterations.

c). Over 200,000 rebars and 250 post-tensioning cables are included in the BIM model.

2. Sport & Recreation Project - Saga Natatorium in Japan for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Pool model completed in 10 months by 5 people.

a). New nodes are constructed utilizing parametric blocks & an API throughout the project.

b). Leveraged automatic editing to develop output drawings.

3.  Lion and Eagle Transmission Tower, Russian Federation - The innovative idea set a new record as the first in Russia and the world to support power lines.

a). Sections (KM, KZh, KMD) were created

b). Tracking drill down status was executed

c). Internal ERP systems used for tracking parts

4. HUS Bridge Hospital, Finland - This complex project included lots of technically demanding structures for the most critical operations and a wide array of design disciplines.

a).  A 'big room' project experience space & virtual reality/augmented reality tools used for customer & contractor engagement

b). Structural features include large glass walls & roofs, post-stressed shaft units & demanding geometry of the steel-framed quiet room.

c). IFC files are accessed using OpenBIM format on mobile devices by 100 site workers per day.

5. Industrial Project - Blominmäki Wastewater Treatment Plant, Finland - The design of the wastewater treatment plant in the Nordics involved vast data management that would have been impossible without BIM.

a). Anticipated to remove up to 99% of phosphorus from the wastewater produced by 400,000 people in Espoo

b). Much of this project built underground, inside the rock

c). The level of detail in the project has been accomplished beyond national BIM requirements

6. Mixed Use Commercial & Residential Project - One Nine Elms, United Kingdom - Nuclear power station construction accuracy brings unmatched efficiency & productivity to the streets of London.

a). 3D rebar models helped the site team visualize potential problems early in the project

b). The same models are used extensively for the design development of the reinforcement before completing final detailed construction drawings and schedules

c). Final reinforcement layouts considered construction methods, sequences, and fixing preferences while achieving the design requirements of consultants

7. Special Recognition Project - Twickenham Riverside Development Bid, United Kingdom - The first Tekla Structural Design model entered in Tekla Global BIM Awards featuring a timber roof.

a). Large, timber grid shell structures provided a sense of destination at the site

b), Tekla model proved the feasibility of the option to integrate large CHS steel frames at the facade line & anchored grid shell to an RC roof deck.
