Compared to 2011-2013, there was a significant increase in traffic citations issued through 2014-2019.

After a gradual decrease trend on traffic fatalities, deaths steeply declined by 42%, to 186 people in 2022 Vs 323 in 2021.

Although this sounds as a great improvement on Kuwait’s driving performance, yet COVID-19 had significant correlation.

Causes of road accidents

It's important to note that these are just some of the most common causes of car accidents, and there can be multiple factors involved in any given accident. By being aware of these causes and taking steps to reduce the risks, we can all help to make our roads safer for everyone.

·        Distracted driving: This includes activities such as texting, talking on the phone, eating, and adjusting the radio.

·        Reckless driving: This includes behaviors such as speeding, tailgating, and making sudden lane changes.

·        Impaired driving: This includes driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

·        Fatigue: Driving while tired can reduce reaction time and increase the likelihood of an accident.

·        Weather conditions: Adverse weather such as rain, snow, and fog can reduce visibility and make roads slippery, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

·        Road design: Poorly designed roads, inadequate signage, and a lack of proper lighting can also contribute to accidents.

·        Vehicle malfunctions: Mechanical failures such as tire blowouts, brake failures, and steering problems can cause accidents.

5 Tips on Staying safe on the road

     I.       Stay Alert! According to Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior there is a significant attribute between the accidents occurring & distracted driving, mainly the use of mobile phone.

II.       Maintain vehicle maintenance: This includes not properly maintaining the vehicle, such as neglecting to change the tires or check the brakes.

III.       Always wear your seatbelt and make sure all passengers do the same.

IV.       Keep a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you.

   V.       Avoid driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In conclusion, Road safety continues to represent a major challenge in Kuwait, the increase volume of citations had contributed to the enhancement of the downward fatality trend. It is important to be aware of human factors and how they can impact road safety, as they can significantly increase the risk of accidents on the road. Road safety is not just a matter of luck, but a choice we make every time we get behind the wheel. By taking proactive measures and being mindful of our own driving behaviors, we can all play a role in making our roads safer. To that end, here is an action you can take to improve road safety:

"Put your phone away while driving"!

Love this

Bader Al-Hadrami, MSc. GradIOSH Good initiatives In addition to this, all the drivers must maintain the speed according to the lane. If you drive the vehicle very slowly on a high speed lane, it will lead to unnecessary traffic congestion & further accidents.

Good analysis Mr Bader. Best wishes
