Trailblazers Spearhead Sustainable Community Tourism
Santiago Rodriguez, Dominican Republic - February 1, 2024.
In a groundbreaking initiative, twelve Americans from various corners of the United States, joined by five locals from the Dominican Republic, embarked on a transformative journey in the villages of Palero and Cabirma, a picturesque area within the Cenoví section of Toma, nestled in the municipality of San Ignacio de Sabaneta . Approximately 29 miles from Monción and from the heart of Sabaneta, El Palero captivates with its diverse landscapes and scenic beauty.
The villagers, proud natives with a profound appreciation for the land, engage in a symbiotic relationship with Mother Nature. They cultivate the land with respect and value reciprocity, mirroring the ethos of Caritas Smile, an organization dedicated to uplifting marginalized communities globally by offering sustainable and soulful life changing tours.
Caritas Smile's mission is to empower both travelers and the communities they visit, fostering a deeper understanding of nature, spiritual self-discovery, mindfulness, and human connectivity through random acts of kindness. Junior "JR" Pelarlta, Caritas Smile's master eco-tour guide, recommended Palero and Cabirma, and Moncion as the ideal destinations for volunteers to make a positive impact. Luciano Martinez and the mountain helpers kept the group safe during a hike to the waterfalls.
"Expect the unexpected" became the mantra for this particular extraordinary trip, epitomizing the spirit of Caritas Smile's unique approach to travel.
SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL
Caritas Smile pioneers the concept of Community Tourism, known locally as "Turismo Comunitario." This involves connecting with communities, learning about their way of life, and giving back to those in need. Sixcia Devine, the founder of Caritas Smile said "We're not here to change how communities live; we're here to elevate their everyday way of life. Our transformative travel isn't just about giving back; it's a purposeful union of action and impact. Whether it's laying a sturdy floor, fixing a leaky roof, securing transportation with a new mule, or contributing to sustainable living through livestock, trees, and gardens—we unite for purpose. It's about sustained development and community growth, and we achieve this by traveling with heart and purpose."
Carefully selected participants from Rhode Island, Florida, Wisconsin, and the Dominican Republic embarked on an unforgettable journey, chosen through a thoughtful interview process designed to ensure a positive and enriching experience for all.
Caritas Smile invited certified yoga guides, Heather Berg and Angie Espinal, to lead invigorating sunrise and sunset yoga sessions for the soulful group. The journey unfolded with a cascade of heartwarming activities, blending yoga and mindfulness while connecting with communities through random acts of kindness.
Laura Reiss, Founder of Kindness Matters in Delray Beach, Florida, shared her experience: "The journey was soul-filled, heartfelt, well-organized, service-focused, and life-changing. Many lives were changed throughout our time together."
RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS
During their visit, participants surprised a young man with a wheelchair, distributed walkers for the elderly, provided diapers, and delivered other essential resources to improve the quality of life for the villagers.
On Three Kings Day, participants, in collaboration with Eco-Camping Adventures, delivered toys to over 80 children. Waldi Tineo, the owner of Eco-Camping Adventures and a former coffee farmer, partnered with Caritas Smile to bring joy to the community.
FIRST GROUP OF AMERICANS
Caritas Smile proudly became the first group of Americans to visit Palero, breaking new ground in sustainable and community tourism. Marcial Collado, President of Eco-Aventura, and Elvin Collado, the master builder of the town, played integral roles in welcoming and supporting the initiative. They are community connectors and excited to share the profound impact that eco-tourism has on their community.
EMPOWERING WOMEN
Palero, nestled in the heart of the Cenoví section of Toma, showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Elvin Collado—a true maestro blending architectural brilliance with hands-on engineering. Then there's Casa de Campo Los Sonadores, a haven of dreams, owned by the wise and guiding force, Elvia Hernández. Elvia’s nickname, Lucecita, is a reflection of the bright sparkling lights she brings to this community. Notably, this is a women-owned and operated gem. Lucecita, a beacon of unity, not only connects people but also extends her wisdom through her words of inspiration. In this vibrant coffee-growing haven, culture thrives, and hospitality becomes an art ingrained in every warm interaction.✨🌳💖
TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE
The Caritas Smile team plans to return in April, June, and July, with upcoming projects focusing on completing two bathrooms and a theater for the children of Palero and helping to rebuild a home for a family of five. The goal is to provide essential facilities while creating a space for play and performances. Click here to book your interview with Caritas Smile.
