Training your body, mind, emotions, and lifestyle

Training your body, mind, emotions, and lifestyle

I think this quote says everything about all projects related to humanising the workplace. So, let's start this article with these wise words from Liz Ryan, founder and CEO at Human Workplace.

In a healthy organisation, the buzz of positive energy is palpable. It shines through. Nobody is working just for the paycheck in a healthy organization. Why would they, when it is so much fun to work at a higher level?

I am an Executive Assistant who is curious about how each one of us can contribute to healthier workplaces. As said by the World Health Organisation, a healthy workplace is one where workers and managers collaborate to continually improve the health, safety, and wellbeing of all workers and by doing this, sustain the productivity of the business.

This time I want to share with you my interview with Sophie Pittaway. She has created the KICK Method that helps individuals and business thrive and maximise ROI on many a level. She believes that a happy team is a happy business. So, a perfect combination for Humanising the Workplace.

JULIA: You have created the KICK Method that helps individuals and businesses thrive and maximize. What is this method about?

SOPHIE: The KICK Method is a 360-degree holistic approach to training your body, mind, emotions, and lifestyle together in one place.

I have made this simple by creating the KICK 4-minute round workout, which anyone can find time to do no matter what their fitness level or mindset is. So, for busy people, people with health issues, or people who feel overwhelmed by the prospect of working out, this puts them back in control of their fitness and makes it feel more achievable – increasing the likelihood of them developing good daily routines and rituals. This has proven to be particularly important during COVID due to gyms being closed, mental health being challenged, and Zoom calls being the new way of working, so we are sitting down more and moving less.

Professional martial artists and boxers train to a 4-minute clock consisting of 3 minutes of training and 1 minute of rest and stretch. Using this approach, we add exercises from HIIT training methods; pushups skipping, jumping jacks, sit-ups and boxing, free weights, and then marrying this up with yoga, stretching, breathing, and relaxation to balance the body and calm the mind.

From my experience of working across a variety of health and wellness platforms, including martial arts, boxing, yoga, and meditation, I have drawn on all of these influences to provide a blended wellness experience for the user.

Experience has shown that training in this blended way really helps with our mind and emotions and teaches us to be still with ourselves and listen to our bodies and minds. This helps with energy and mood, which in turn aids better sleeping patterns and eating habits.

People like this method because we have made training relatable, easy to do, and simple to follow. Anyone can train a KICK 4-minute round every day, so there is no excuse. I help people fall in love with training when actually they have never enjoyed working out. The KICK Community forms a really safe, motivational, and inspirational space where individuals can hang out, interact if they choose to, and work off the KICK Lifestyle APP alone and then together. Businesses are also benefiting by using our KICK APP to support employee wellness and using the KICK 4-minute round method to help people on back-to-back Zoom calls all day.

I have made this simple by creating the KICK 4-minute round workout, which anyone can find time to do no matter what their fitness level or mindset.

JULIA: Sometimes, humans in the workplace get so focused on doing the work that we forget about “being” human. We lose sight of the basic, in-born instincts that are behind our own daily business interactions – and that of others. Do you believe humanising the workplace is everyone’s responsibility?

SOPHIE: Absolutely! It is – everyone needs to take accountability for recognizing that people have personal lives and challenges going on outside work that affect them and their work on a daily basis – again, this has been brought into sharp focus during the pandemic with people dealing with family and friend illness and even death.

However, corporates also need to build systems that humanize the culture, staff recognition, personal development opportunities, employee assistance schemes, and flexible working opportunities are all important. Not only this is good for business as it promotes employee engagement and enables organisations to attract the best staff.

The pandemic has shown that companies who have failed to look after their employees have suffered greater losses – being kind is now part of the brand that companies cannot afford to ignore.

JULIA: Business leaders who want to build more agile and responsive organizations must draw a direct line from their corporate values to everybody’s actions that make work more human by operationalizing those values. What does a more human workplace look like for you?

SOPHIE: It is fundamentally about the recognition that people are people first and workers second. The recognition that team members' mental wellness is key to a successful company and supporting this with mental health awareness and resilience training. Also appointing mental health champions in the workplace, and providing formal and informal debriefing sessions for team members experiencing trauma work are all keyways of doing this.

Promoting a leadership style that achieves a balance between respect and understanding rather than purely based on driving commercial outcomes.

It is fundamentally about the recognition that people are people first and workers second.

JULIA: Do you believe you are helping people thrive in the workplace, feel included, respected, and valued?

SOPHIE: The Kicklifestyle app is being used in corporate settings to support employee, fitness, and mental wellbeing – this is proven to be particularly important when people are working from home and lack structure and social interaction. The 4-minute round sessions get people moving and laughing and make them feel connected to their colleagues as they are engaging in a group activity that is unrelated to work – this is the power of the kick 4-minute round.

JULIA: Humanising the workplace also has to do with thriving, engagement, recognition, and employee needs to feel like a human and not a number. So how do we foster this sense of belonging, individuality, and human recognition?

SOPHIE: Leadership is key to achieving this – leading by example, showing respect, treating people fairly. As the great Brené Brown says, trust is not built through grand gestures but through everyday small acts. In my experience, these include listening to staff, advocating for them, doing what you say you will do, following up, finding out what motivates them and what is happening in their personal life that may affect them at work.

The most important thing is to communicate, communicate, communicate.

As the great Brené Brown says, trust is not built through grand gestures but through everyday small acts.

JULIA: Executive Assistants have an essential role in supporting executives, management teams, and leading networks of assistants. As members of leadership teams, they impact decision-making and bring crucial topics to the business agenda. What are three concrete actions you would recommend Executive Assistants put in place to help their organizations create happier and healthier workplaces?

SOPHIE: 1. EAs need to start with their own personal happiness first by taking control of their own diary, putting in meetings with themselves to plan rather than working back-to-back around the clock for their boss. From my experience, once the EA starts to take accountability for their own wellness and work schedule, they perform better, and their bosses feed off of this. In turn, the company benefits as all are happier and feel valued.

2. Focus on employee wellbeing! You can do that by introducing a breakout area, encouraging staff to take breaks, going for a walk at lunchtime, and starting a walking group. Also, by encouraging healthy eating choices by providing fruit and water supplies and choosing healthy eating options for catered meetings, we go back to the office.

3. Invest in a way to promote good exercise and mental health habits, for example, using the Kicklifestyle app.

Focus on employee wellbeing!
