Transform the Trauma of Your Past into Your Purpose

Transform the Trauma of Your Past into Your Purpose

70% of us have experienced trauma in our lives, traumas that are oftentimes left unresolved, and unfaced. Many of us neglect our mental health as we scale into leading teams and providing more plentifully for our families because of the burden we place on ourselves: to exude 24/7 superhuman "strength."

But this strategy can be likened to a ticking time bomb. We neglect our mental health to the point of heart attack, panic attack or a complete breakdown, discrediting being examples to the teams we lead and people we love.

Prioritize Your Mental Health

A much safer strategy is to prioritize our mental health, always and forever. Which means being honest with ourselves, pushing our egos aside, and becoming vulnerable with the teams we lead.

Courtney Harring, co-founder of MedSnake Media, and I spoke with Laurine LeBlanc (picture below), LPC who has climbed from the bottom to the top of the mental health counseling ladder for the last nine years with the U.S. Department of Defense, regarding her take on how we can all prioritize our mental health on a daily basis.

LeBlanc suggests that we spend time with ourselves, outside of our roles as a decision maker, spouse, parent, etc., and can do this by exercising, journaling, meditating or even listening to music. For leaders in work environments, Laurine tells that counseling can only make us better leaders, parents, family, and friends. The stigma that help is weak needs to be eliminated, because nothing can be further from the truth.

I really needed to read this! Working more than full time, almost finishing an MBA, raising three kids, and managing a large team. It can be the easiest thing in the world to neglect your own needs and mental health when you have this history. Autopilot is a well know state for many of us.
