Emotions control and determine the quality of our lives.

What controls our lives are the meanings we give to things in our lives, which are shaped by our psychology and our world view (the beliefs and values that we've created).

Two people can experience COVID-19 and have entirely different experiences, where one person thinks, "I am missing out on all the things I love about spring." Someone else, on the other hand, thinks, "This is my time to serve my family and give them more love than ever before." The difference in meaning not only affects the quality of each person's life but what action they will take next.

Once an individual establishes a meaning, they will have a pattern of emotions that they associate to the meaning as their natural way of coping.

For example, if two people are in a relationship, and one decides to leave, they may become depressed. And yet another person may respond to the same situation and be grateful for the time they spent together.

Our patterns of emotions drive all meanings. We all have patterns of emotions. For example, we like to be around happy people. We also know people who seem to be continuously frustrated or sad.

We all have a variety of emotions we consistently experience, and three specific things drive these emotions:

How we use our physical body (breathing, physiology, and movement)

Example: When we are confident, we breathe deeper, stand taller, and move swifter than when we are unsure in ourselves.

Whatever we focus on, we feel. (Focus = Feeling)

Example: When we focus on something we love, we feel lighter and peaceful. If we focus on something we dislike, we feel heavier and unrest.

The words we use to describe an experience change the meaning we experience.

Example: When we explain how we feel as ok, we feel and think differently than if we describe how we are feeling as outstanding.

Call to action:

The next time you feel a feeling that doesn't bring out your best, do the following:

Stand the way you would stand if you felt unstoppable.

Think about a time where you accomplished something that made you feel proud.

Say what you said to yourself when you felt loved.

You will feel better instantly!
