Transforming Energy: A Visit to Nature Energy's Trailblazing Biogas Facility
On August 4th, TR4NSFORM ENERGY took another step into the future of energy conversion by visiting Denmark's largest biogas company, Nature Energy . Niels Leidecker and Jesper Rhode Andersen represented TR4NSFORM ENERGY during the walkthrough which took place at the site situated near Sønderborg in Denmark. As a pioneer in renewable energy Nature Energy leads the way in converting CO2 to natural gas through the innovative Biological methanation process.
The Power of Biological Methanation
Biological methanation is a groundbreaking conversion process that leverages highly specialized microorganisms within the domain Archaea to generate methane. This bio-catalytic transformation has been hailed as a vital storage technology for renewable energy, especially as nations shift towards cleaner energy solutions. First implemented in a power-to-gas plant in 2015 in Allendorf, Germany, this technology has multiple applications and processes, each with distinct possibilities.
The innovative team at Nature Energy with project innovation director Jeppe Bæk has pioneered this conversion of biogenic CO2 and CH4 into natural gas, rather than releasing it into the air or storing it underground. By combining CO2 with hydrogen from an electrolysis plant on-site, they have launched convertion concept known as Power-to-X, which describes the conversion of electric energy into various kinds of fuel or fertilizer.
Nature Energy's Biogas Facility
With an annual production of 20 million cubic meters of biogas and an upcoming hydrogen production installation of 10 megawatt capacity, the plant near Sønderborg is on the cutting edge of the biogas revolution. This advancement is in line with TR4NSFORM ENERGY's energy island concept, which has vast potential in markets like Brazil with strong prospects for biogas production.
Project Innovation director, Jeppe Bæk, provided an enlightening walkthrough of the entire process, showcasing the commitment to innovation that has allowed Nature Energy to lead the green transition in Europe.

1yHopefully this project will convince people that it is absolutely possible to convert CO2 and H2 into CH4. 👍 Despite the extensive research that is done in different parts of the world, some people are still sceptic about biomethanisation.
