Transiting Through Schengen Countries: Do you need a transit visa?
It is commonly assumed that a traveller requires a transit visa only if he or she crosses the immigration counter or leaves the airport. But, there are many ifs and buts for an Indian traveller who is transiting at Schengen countries. Here are indispensable pointers to avoid disappointment:
1) 2 Types of Transit Visas:
Type A – refers to air-transit. This transit visa is for the airport; you can remain in the airport premises only.
Type B – refers to land-transit. With this transit visa, you can leave the airport for a certain duration.
2) Mandate for Indians:
Generally, a transit visa is not required for travellers transiting through a single Schengen airport. However, there are certain Schengen countries that have mandated transit visa requirements for many countries including India.
3) Verify, verify, verify:
While planning for your trip, get your itinerary checked from a trusted agent to determine transit visit requirements. You may also check the same at IATA Travel Centre website.
If the traveller leaves for the airport without the required transit visa, he or she will be sent back home. So, next time you book a flight ticket with layover at a Schengen country, check the transit visa criteria closely.
