Transition Plan: Clinical Research Coordinator to Clinical Research Associate (CRA)

Transition Plan: Clinical Research Coordinator to Clinical Research Associate (CRA)

Many of my clinical research connections have requested additional information on transitioning from a Clinical Research or Study Coordinator to a Clinical Research Associate. I have put together a free, helpful transition plan as a starting point for those in my clinical research network seeking to embark on this career change journey.

Clinical research offers exciting opportunities for growth and career advancement, but it is sometimes a complex and circuitous road to navigate. As a clinical research coordinator, you have already laid a strong foundation for transitioning into a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) role.

This transition plan aims to guide you through the steps to make this career change successfully. You can embark on a rewarding journey as a CRA by leveraging your existing qualifications, gaining additional training and certifications, networking with industry professionals, and strategically positioning yourself for CRA roles.

This plan incorporates insights from the typical background of a CRA, the responsibilities involved, and the skills required, along with considerations for the different types of monitoring. Let's review and break down the steps to help you navigate this transition and advance your clinical research career.

1.   Assess Current Qualifications and Experience:

a.    Evaluate your strengths, such as a nursing degree, current clinical research experience, and relevant clinical or science/academic degrees.

b.   Determine and categorize your experience as a research coordinator, clinical experience (e.g., medical assistant, registered nurse, nurse practitioner), and clinical research certifications (e.g., SOCRA CCRP® or ACRP-CP) versus the typical background and requirements for a CRA.

2.   Research and Understand the Role of a CRA:

a.    Conduct thorough research on the responsibilities, skills, and qualifications required for a CRA position.

b.   Gain insights into the life of a CRA, such as remote work, travel expectations, communication methods, and visit preparation and follow-up.

3.   Identify Skill and Knowledge Gaps:

a.    Compare the current qualifications and experience with the typical background of a CRA and identify skill/knowledge gaps.

b.   Determine areas where additional skills, knowledge, or certifications may be required for a successful transition.

4.   Supplemental Training and Certifications:

a.    Enroll in courses or programs to bridge any identified gaps in knowledge or skills required for a CRA role.

b.   Pursue additional certifications related to clinical research, such as advanced research coordination or monitoring certifications.

c. Use online resources, webinars, and conferences to stay updated on industry trends and best practices.

5.   Network with CRAs and Industry Professionals:

a.    Establish connections with current CRAs to gain insights, mentorship, and guidance during the transition.

b.   Attend industry events, conferences, and local networking events to expand professional networks.

c.    Join relevant professional associations or organizations focused on clinical research to access resources and networking opportunities.

6.   Update Resume and Cover Letter:

a.    Revise the resume to highlight relevant clinical research experience, certifications, and acquired skills.

b.   Emphasize transferable skills, such as attention to detail, organizational abilities, and strong communication skills.

c.    Tailor the resume and cover letter to match the requirements of CRA positions and showcase the individual's commitment to professional growth.

7.   Prepare for Travel Demands:

a.    Assess personal circumstances and willingness to travel frequently (60-80%).

b.   Ensure flexibility and adaptability to be away from home for multiple days, depending on workload and site visits.

c.    Develop effective strategies for managing travel logistics, including accommodation, transportation, and personal commitments.

8.   Determine Preferred Monitoring Type:

a.    Research different types of monitoring, including traditional onsite monitoring, risk-based monitoring, central monitoring, remote monitoring, in-house CRAs, and regulatory CRAs.

b.   Evaluate personal preferences and interests to identify the type of monitoring that aligns with career goals (pursuing an IHCRA role vs. a Traveling CRA role)

c.    Consider gaining exposure and experience in different monitoring types to broaden your skill sets.

9.   Job Search and Application Process:

a.    Utilize online job boards, professional networks, and industry-specific websites to find CRA job openings.

b.   Tailor each application to highlight relevant experience, qualifications, and transferable skills.

c.    Prepare for interviews by researching the organization, understanding the role's requirements, and practicing common interview questions.

10. Continuous Professional Development:

a.    Commit to lifelong learning and professional development in clinical research.

b.   Stay updated with changes in regulations, guidelines, and industry trends.

c.    Pursue advanced degrees or specialized certifications to enhance career prospects and opportunities for growth.

Remember, this transition plan is simply a general guideline. Tailor the steps according to your circumstances, preferences, and opportunities. Networking and seeking guidance from professionals already working as CRAs can also provide valuable insights and support throughout the transition process.
