Dutch Railways (NS) has recently implemented changes to the way travellers can avail themselves of discounts when journeying together. If you're a frequent traveller on the Dutch rail network, particularly during off-peak hours, these changes are important to understand. Effective immediately, NS has introduced the concept of a "joint travel code" to streamline the process of traveling with companions while enjoying discounts.

What is the Joint Travel Code? The joint travel code is a unique identifier that connects a season ticket holder with fellow travellers who wish to journey together at a discounted rate. This code serves as a link between the primary ticket holder and their companions, ensuring that discounts are correctly applied and preventing misuse of the Samenreiskorting (Together Travel Discount) system.

How to obtain and use the joint travel code For those holding an NS account, acquiring and sharing the joint travel code is a straightforward process:

1. Log in: Access your NS account via the NS website or NS app.
2. Access Samenreiskorting: Upon logging in, locate the "Samenreiskorting" section on your homepage.
3. Share Code: Choose the option to "Share together travel code" and obtain the unique code.
4. Share with Companions: Share the code with your fellow travelers via email, messaging apps, or any preferred method of communication.

After sharing the code, recipients have a three-day window to redeem it for the Together Travel Discount. Depending on their NS subscription, they can either directly discount through their NS account or buy a suitable ticket via the NS website. If they opt for purchasing via the website, they'll still need to download the NS app and set up an account to access and utilize the e-tickets sent to their email address.

If you have friends visiting who won't require a long-term NS account, you can always upload their e-tickets to your NS mobile app since you'll be traveling together.
