Triggers Are Opportunities to Heal: A Somatic Approach to Emotional Healing

When we get emotionally triggered, it means we’re experiencing a stress response to a past traumatic experience. Whether the trauma is big or small, two things happen during a trigger:

1. Negative Thoughts: These can feel anxious, overwhelming, and intrusive.

2. Physical Sensations: The body responds with constriction, tension, or even pain.

Shifting our awareness from thoughts to physical sensations during these moments is the key to protecting ourselves from spiraling into overthinking.

Grounding Yourself in the Storm

When you’re triggered, it’s vital to ground yourself. Find a quiet space where you can sit down, close your eyes, and place gentle pressure on your heart. This practice connects you to your body and anchors you in the present moment.

By physically feeling the trigger within your body, you calm the overactive mind and, most importantly, allow the emotional pain to release.

Here’s why this works:

Triggers are open wounds from past painful experiences.

When we acknowledge and feel these emotions instead of overthinking them, we create an opportunity to heal.

Overthinking pushes those feelings down, disconnecting us from the healing process and worsening the situation.

Healing Through Compassion and Connection

When I get triggered, I allow the pain in, but I also protect myself. Grounding isn’t about resisting emotions; it’s about creating a safe space to feel them without judgment.

The body becomes your sanctuary, a "cabin in the woods" that shields you from the "dark forest" of overwhelming thoughts. By somatically connecting to your body, you release the emotional charge of the trigger.

Somatic Grounding

A Practical Approach to Triggers

Acknowledge the trigger as an opportunity to heal.

Remove yourself from distractions. Find a safe and quiet space.

Ground yourself by connecting to your body:

Sit down.

Close your eyes.

Apply gentle pressure to your heart.

Focus on the physical sensations.

Release the trigger by allowing yourself to feel the emotions fully, without judgment.

Why Triggers Are for Us, Not Against Us

Triggers may show up at inconvenient times, but they are not our enemies. They are invitations to release stored pain, to reconnect with ourselves, and to heal.

By meeting triggers with compassion, neutrality, and a willingness to feel, we transform them into powerful moments of growth.

Remember: The body is your sanctuary. The mind can spiral, but the body grounds you. When triggered, go within. The healing lies in allowing the body to guide you through the storm.

Hope this inspired you.
