Trtl Unpacks... Hiking in the Highlands with @WayfaringKiwi

While Yvette Webster may call New Zealand home, it’s safe to say that she has spent more time exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland than many who have lived here their entire lives. Her passion for the outdoors and love for Scotland shines through in her adventures, and she has shared some of her top hiking recommendations with Trtl.

The stunning mountains are a defining feature of the Scottish landscape, offering a variety of trails that cater to all levels of hikers, and the views from the summits are often even more breathtaking than what you can find at ground level.

Whether you’re a seasoned mountaineer or just starting out on your hiking journey, Yvette has highlighted three of her favorite hikes in Scotland, each with its unique charm and challenge:

1. Easy: Glen Coe Lochan

Perfect for beginners or those looking for a leisurely stroll, the Glen Coe Lochan trail offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and tranquil waters. This picturesque walk meanders through ancient woodlands, making it an ideal choice for a relaxing day out in nature. Keep your camera ready, as the scenery is nothing short of enchanting!

Trtl Tip: This is a wheelchair-accessible walk and takes about 10 minutes on a gentle slope to reach the lake and around 45 minutes to complete the entire loop.

2. Moderate: Lost Valley

For those seeking a bit more adventure, the Lost Valley hike is an excellent choice. While it does involve a bit of scrambling and requires proper hiking attire, it’s manageable for most hikers. As you navigate the trail, you’ll be following in the footsteps of history—legend has it that this is where the MacDonald clan used to hide their stolen cattle. Just imagine how they managed to get those cows up this mountain! This trail offers not only a thrilling adventure but also a fascinating glimpse into Scotland’s storied past.

Trtl Tip: Get there as early as possible, parking spaces are limited.

3. Difficult: Glen Coul

For seasoned hikers craving a true adventure, the Glen Coul trail is a must-try. Located in Kylesku in the stunning Northwest Highlands, this day hike takes you on a journey through breathtaking landscapes. You can hike to the bothy, spend the night soaking in the tranquility of the wilderness, and then hike out the next day. The adventure begins at the iconic Kylesku Bridge, a picturesque spot along the North Coast 500 that provides stunning views of the surrounding area. This experience promises not just a challenging hike, but also the chance to connect deeply with nature in one of Scotland’s most breathtaking settings.

Trtl Tip: The river can become boggy, so try not to stay too close to it for too long.

No matter your skill level, Scotland’s mountains offer something for everyone. With Yvette’s expert recommendations, you’re sure to find the perfect hike that suits your style and experience. So lace up your boots, pack your gear, and get ready to explore the enchanting beauty of Scotland’s great outdoors!
