The True Meaning and Power of Growth Mindset
In a recent article, the author argued that the concept of "growth mindset" is overhyped and misunderstood. While Fast Company nailed the hook, and no doubt generated massive clicks—with all due respect to the good Doctor Chamorro-Premuzic—the article itself is based on a flawed and inaccurate definition of what growth mindset actually means. By building a case on this faulty foundation, the author's criticisms miss the mark.
The concern that sparked this rebuttal is rooted in defense of growth mindset, as a practically useful toolset for any human willing to apply it in the sense it was originally defined, by Dr. Carol Dweck .
At its core, a growth mindset is the belief that one's abilities and intelligence can be developed and improved over time through effort, learning, good strategies, and input from others.
This contrasts with a fixed mindset—the limiting belief that abilities and talents are innate and unchangeable.
When properly understood and applied, cultivating a growth mindset can lead to greater motivation, achievement, and personal growth.
The article's author claims growth mindset is simply about "positive thinking" and argues it doesn't necessarily lead to positive outcomes. But this is a straw-man argument. As Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, who coined the term, explains,
"It's not just about effort. It's about effort, strategies, seeking input, and learning from setbacks."[1]
Growth mindset is a nuanced concept, not blind optimism.
For example, research shows that individuals with a growth mindset achieve more by proactively seeking input, using effective strategies for development, and viewing challenges as opportunities to learn[1]. In contrast, those with a fixed mindset avoid challenges that might expose weaknesses they believe can't change, leading to less growth[1][2].
The power of growth mindset is evident in both individual and organizational contexts. Companies that embody a growth mindset demonstrate greater support for collaboration and innovation. Their employees feel empowered to take on new challenges and learn from failures[2]. Fixed mindset companies, on the other hand, report more cheating and deception among employees trying to "look good" rather than learn[2].
Importantly, growth mindset does not mean blindly persisting when one lacks ability.
It's about strategically applying effort where there is potential for growth and learning from failures along the way[2][3]. Knowing when to pivot is part of the growth-oriented approach. The article's implication that growth mindset encourages unrealistic persistence is another misrepresentation.
While not a panacea, a significant body of research has linked growth mindset to improved academic performance[1][4][5], especially for struggling students. One study found that a short online growth mindset intervention improved grades and course completion. Even if effects are sometimes modest, instilling a growth mindset is one of the most cost-effective ways to boost learning and achievement[5][6].
Beyond academics, a growth mindset enables people to embrace challenges, persist through obstacles, learn from criticism, find inspiration in others' success, and achieve through sustained effort.

In business, growth-minded entrepreneurs and employees continually seek to develop new skills, embrace feedback, and iterate to improve. They view setbacks as chances to learn rather than threats to self-image.
Ultimately, the many benefits of a growth mindset are clear when the concept is properly understood and applied.
The research is ongoing, but discounting growth mindset based on misconceptions does a disservice to anyone seeking to live, learn and work more effectively.
When accurately defined and practiced, a growth mindset remains a powerful tool for self-improvement and unlocking human potential.
Not a Magic Bullet
As Dr. Dweck puts it,
"A growth mindset is about embodying a passion for learning, self-improvement, and taking informed risks, not just effort. It's an invaluable tool, not a magic bullet."
