True to Yourself, Appealing to Others: Using Authenticity in Personal Branding
In a recent Personal Brand workshop I conducted, an intriguing question surfaced from one of the delegates: "I have been told that I need to be authentic. Is that correct?" This question opens up a critical discussion in the realm of personal branding. Authenticity is often lauded as the cornerstone of personal branding, but the reality is not always straightforward.
Is our 'authentic self' always the best representation for our personal brand?
Authenticity, in its essence, is about being genuine and true to oneself. However, in the intricate landscape of personal branding, the notion of authenticity intersects with the expectations and needs of our audience. The question then arises: Is our 'authentic self' always the best representation for our personal brand?
Consider a financial planner whose genuine traits include impatience, grumpiness, and a quick temper. Would projecting these characteristics be beneficial in building a trustworthy and approachable personal brand? Likely not.
This scenario underscores the necessity of curating certain aspects of our persona. Some may refer to this process as rebranding, but it is more about striking a balance between being true to ourselves and aligning with what our target audience expects and respects. This approach does not advocate for inauthenticity; rather, it emphasizes the strategic presentation of those facets of our personality that resonate most with our intended audience.

When training and coaching on personal branding, I emphasize the importance of this balance. Authenticity should not be about rigidly sticking to every aspect of our natural personality, especially if certain traits do not align with professional expectations. Instead, it's about mindfully presenting ourselves in a manner that is both true to our core values and appealing to our audience.
For instance, a leader known for being overly direct and blunt might find that softening their communication style does not diminish their authenticity. Instead, it enhances their ability to connect with a broader audience. Similarly, an introverted professional might choose to develop public speaking skills, not to change their intrinsic nature, but to effectively communicate their ideas and connect with their audience.
This balance is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It varies significantly based on individual personalities, career paths, and audience expectations. The key is to maintain a core of authenticity while flexibly adapting to the demands of the professional environment. This adaptive authenticity is what sets a powerful personal brand apart.

In essence, personal branding is about showcasing the best version of ourselves, one that is genuine yet adaptable to the context in which we operate. It involves introspection, understanding our unique value proposition, and aligning it with what is valued and expected in our professional sphere.
The journey towards mastering this balance is ongoing. It involves constant learning, self-awareness, and adaptability. It's about recognizing that while our authentic self is the foundation of our brand, the way we present it can, and often should, be tailored to align with our audience's expectations and needs.
