Trump Cabinet Watch: Former Goldman Sachs partner Steven Mnuchin — who "signed on at a time when many from Wall Street stayed away" — is favored for Treasury Secretary, Bloomberg reports. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and John Bolton, US Ambassador to the UN under Bush 43, are on the short list for Secretary of State, per the Wall Street Journal. SEC chair Mary Jo White is stepping down, three years before her term ends, "clearing the way for ...Trump to reshape the way Wall Street is regulated," The Washington Post reports. US college enrollment by overseas students set a record in the 2015-16 academic year. The total exceeded one million for the first time, the Wall Street Journal reports, and was up 7% year-over-year and "nearly double the level of 10 years ago." China sent the largest number of students and India was No. 2 — up 25% from the prior academic year.
November's supermoon (which peaks tonight) will be the "biggest and brightest" in 69 years. The technical term is "perigee" and the sight is heavenly: The Moon appears "up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter in the sky." The 1912 supermoon was only about 60 miles closer, and space.com says 2034's will be even closer.
Trump Policy Watch: The president-elect and Russian president Vladimir Putin spoke. Topics included terrorism and the 'extremely unsatisfactory' state of bilateral relations … The incoming administration is "seeking quick ways" to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, Reuters reports. Trump's transition team is "considering ways to bypass a theoretical four-year procedure for leaving the accord" … China has latched on to Trump's promise for major infrastructure upgrades, saying it has a "positive and open attitude toward cooperation that benefits our two countries." It's not clear if foreign firms — especially those from a country Trump singled out for "unfair" practices — would be allowed to bid, but China is "the world's undisputed construction superpower," NBC News observes.
