Trump's New Air Travel Ban
On Monday 6 March 2017, President Trump signed an executive order temporarily blocking travel for immigrants from six countries.
Just like the previous ban this is a 90-day ban on travellers from:
Syria
Sudan
Libya
Somalia
Yemen
Iran
The new order will take effect on 16 March in order to avoid the chaos attending the order’s first version. President Trump’s first travel ban, in January 2017, was brought in with little notice and saw travellers with valid visas detained when they landed. The new order will also explicitly not apply to green card holders from these countries.
In part because of these issues, President Trump’s first attempt to bring in the legislation was overturned by US courts in February.
There is and was a lot of controversy around Trump’s travel ban but what a lot of people do not know is that President Trump was executing a 65-year-old provision of the federal Immigration and Nationality Act.
The provision gives presidents broad authority to ban individual immigrants or groups of immigrants. Presidents haven’t hesitated to use it.
Barack Obama invoked it 19 times, Bill Clinton 12 times, George W. Bush six times and Ronald Reagan five times. George H.W. Bush invoked it once.
It’s not hard to interpret the provision as a license for a president to do whatever he wants when it comes to keeping out certain people. Here’s the text:
"Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or non-immigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate."
There is no doubt that terrorism is unfortunately on the increase across the world as the Global Terrorism Index, produced by the London-based Institute for Economics and Peace found:
- In OECD member countries, deaths from terrorism dramatically increased in 2015, rising by 650 per cent when compared to 2014. Twenty-one of the 34 OECD countries experienced at least one terrorist attack with the majority of deaths occurring in Turkey and France.
- ISIL-a iliated groups undertook attacks in 28 countries in 2015, up from 13 countries in 2014.
- There were 274 known terrorist groups that carried out an attack in 2015, of these 103 groups did not kill anyone.
- Twenty-three countries recorded their highest number of deaths from terrorism in 2015. This is six more than the previous high of 17 countries in 2014.
With aircraft and airports being a target, like we recently saw in Turkey and Brussels, this is encouraging more HNWIs to either charter private jets or even better own their own aircraft. Owning your own jet from a security standpoint is far better as you control everything from pilot hiring, training, maintenance, etc.
President Trump is very much playing the prevention game and this is only a 90 day ban in order to better assess the situation and put systems in place to avoid attacks happening on American soil. It seems like mainstream media take every excuse to attack President Trump instead of thinking about the why. The other option would be to be relaxed about it, let anyone in, have terrorists attack and then go and bomb another country that will not only cost a lot more American lives but also a ton of cash.
I am not being pro-Trump here but terrorism is on the rise and Trump’s ban does not involve any violence and it isn’t taking any lives, just a temporary ban for 90 days…give him a chance to keep America safe!
