Our sessions at Drataverse reminded us of the importance of trust and transparency for businesses everywhere. Here are some of the hottest takes from the day:

  • Trust shapes every decision we make: VP of Product Brian Elmi highlighted this point as he shared his introduction to Drata and the team before we officially launched. Trust goes beyond software—we make sure there’s trust between coworkers and customers alike.
  • The time for seamless third party risk management is now: Third party risk management was a big topic this year, as more and more companies are beginning to wonder about their vendors’ security posture. In fact, 80 percent of businesses fear they don’t have full visibility into their third party security posture. The risk of vendors is a critical aspect of a company’s overall risk, making now a great time to enhance the third party risk management process.
  • Meaningful collaboration can make all the difference: We ended the day with a fireside chat between Drata CEO Adam Markowitz and NFL hall of famer Jerry Rice. When Adam listed off some of Jerry’s unbelievable accomplishments during his time in the NFL, the first thing he credited was his team. He encouraged the crowd to invest in their counterparts and find ways to truly cheer each other on.

The key to success in GRC: focused reading, research and effective communication.

Focused Reading:

Very few people will take the time to actually read the standards, source documents, and guidance. By taking the time to understand complex information, you will be able to spot patterns, predict challenges, and offer innovative solutions to the business.

Research:

Research allows you to navigate uncertainties, uncover risks, make informed decisions, and stay updated on trends, practices, and rules.

Effective Communication:

Be the go-to subject matter expert (SME) in GRC by communicating your knowledge to the rest of the business. Articulate complex concepts clearly, share insights, and provide guidance. Build strong relationships and become a trusted advisor.

In an age dominated by AI and other cutting-edge technologies, the significance of seemingly elementary skills like focused reading, research, and effective communication have reached new heights. These skills are increasingly rare, yet their importance has grown exponentially.

Having strong technical knowledge is definitely necessary for success in GRC, but if you don’t enjoy the process of focused reading, research and effectively communicating with the rest of the business, you will have limited success in the field of GRC.
