● LOS ANGELES FIRES: Worries over major wind warnings for Tuesday and Wednesday in Los Angeles as the fires continue to burn, but slowly. The Chula Vista training center reaches out to athletes with support opportunities. The LA28 organizers and the International Gymnastics Federation offered messages of support. ● LOS ANGELES 2028: The L.A. Metropolitan Transportation Authority canceled a Wednesday meeting of its Ad Hoc 2028 Olympics and Paralympics committee due to the fires, but sees good prospects for $200 million in Federal grants. ● Paris 2024: A French news site reports that 100 Olympic medals have been returned for replacement to the Paris organizers, as the Monnaie de Paris – the French Mint – will have to solve the issues with excessive wear.
● Winter World University Games: The Winter WUG is on in Turin (ITA), with more than 2,500 athletes from 54 countries competing in 92 events in 11 sports.
● International Olympic Committee: Japan’s Morinari Watanabe, head of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), said in an interview that his concept for five cities holding an Olympic Games on a 24-hour basis may not be the answer to making the Games more universal, but it’s a way to get the conversation started.
● Russia: The Russian Anti-Doping Agency reported an increase in the number of Therapeutic Use Exemptions requested in 2024 at 282, up from 242 in 2023.
¶ World Curling confirmed that the ban on Russia and Belarus will be extended through the end of the 2024-25 season.
● Fencing: USA Fencing announced a third “Listening Tour” in 2025, with chief exec Phil Andrews talking to athletes, coaches, officials and families at five sites this year, plus a sixth, online session. Good idea; will more National Governing Bodies do this?
● Football: U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone confirmed that the federation will pursue – with vigor – hosting rights, with Mexico, for the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
● Ski Mountaineering: Swiss star Remi Bonnet and French star Axelle Gachet Mollaret each won – impressively – their second races of the ISMF World Cup in Azerbaijan.
● Speedskating: American stars Jordan Stolz and Brittany Bowe were big winners at the U.S. Winter World Cup Qualifier in Utah. Stolz won four races in the men’s 500-1,000-1,500 m and Bowe won twice, at 500-1,000 m, and second at 1,500 m. The ISU World Cup resumes later this month.
