Tuesday "Tech-In" ➡️Oracle's GenAI Strategy: How AI is Changing the Way We Develop and Deploy Applications

In a recent keynote at Oracle CloudWorld, Oracle's Chairman and CTO, Larry Ellison, illuminated the path Oracle is forging with Generative AI (GenAI). He outlined Oracle's bold new strategy to embed Generative AI (GenAI) into the company's vast portfolio of cloud services. This is a significant development, as GenAI has the potential to revolutionize many industries and improve the human condition.

Ellison shared that Oracle is one of the best positioned among cloud vendors to help companies develop and deploy GenAI models. This is due to the company's Gen2 Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), which offers unique advantages for training and deploying GenAI models.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) uses ultrafast remote data memory access (RDMA) networking and connects NVIDIA GPUs in huge superclusters. This allows OCI to train GenAI models at twice the speed of other clouds and at less than half the cost.

  • OCI's Bare Metal Instances with NVIDIA H100 GPUs speed up large AI model training, offering up to 30x better AI inference and 4x faster training than previous A100 GPUs. For high-intensity workloads, OCI Supercluster connects thousands of H100 GPUs over a low-latency network. Availability is expected in Oracle's London and Chicago Cloud Regions later this year.
  • OCI's instances with NVIDIA L40S GPUs offer a versatile option for smaller AI tasks, showing up to 20% better generative AI performance and 70% faster fine-tuning than A100 GPUs. Availability is expected within the next year. View Full Press Release

Oracle is already using GenAI to improve its own products and services. For example, the company is developing a new application generator that uses GenAI to automatically generate code in Oracle APEX based on developer prompts. This will allow Oracle to develop new applications faster and with smaller development teams, while also reducing security risks.

Oracle is announcing a number of new GenAI-enabled services, including:

  • A new, integrated vector database that stores the semantic content of documents, images, and other unstructured data as vectors. This will enable applications to perform fast similarity queries and to add an LLM-based natural language interface.
  • New capabilities that let developers generate relational table schema from JSON documents in a new object relational database. This will give developers the flexibility to build applications using JSON documents while still benefiting from the strengths of the SQL query language.

Oracle's GenAI strategy has a number of implications for businesses of all sizes. For example, GenAI-enabled applications can help businesses to:

  • Automate tasks and processes, freeing up employees to focus on more strategic work.
  • Improve customer service by providing more personalized and timely support.
  • Develop new products and services faster and more efficiently.
  • Make better decisions based on insights from large amounts of data.
  • Reduce costs and improve profitability.

As GenAI continues to develop and mature, businesses that embrace this technology will be well-positioned to succeed in the years to come.

How can businesses prepare for the GenAI future?

Here are a few things that businesses can do to prepare for the GenAI future:

  • Invest in training and development. GenAI is a complex technology, so businesses need to invest in training their employees on how to use it effectively.
  • Start experimenting with GenAI now. There are a number of GenAI-enabled tools and services available today, so businesses can start experimenting with them to see how they can benefit their operations.
  • Partner with a cloud provider that has expertise in GenAI. Oracle is one of a few cloud providers that is investing heavily in GenAI. Businesses can partner with Oracle to get access to the latest GenAI technologies and expertise.

GenAI is a powerful new technology with the potential to transform many industries. Businesses that are early adopters of GenAI will be well-positioned to succeed in the years to come.
