The programme of Italy's Biennial of Technology - a well thought through series of free public talks in mid-April, this year devoted to "Realistic Utopias" - was launched today.
The event is organised by the
Politecnico di Torino
(Turin, Italy), under the stewardship of co-curators
Juan Carlos De Martin
and
Luca De Biase
.
Based on previous years, we can expect videos of the talks in original language to be available very soon after the talks on this Youtube channel.
Please note that the "conference links" below are all referring to pages in Italian (translations will probably follow soon).
International speakers who will talk in English include:
-
Cory Doctorow
(conference link) - Cory will talk about internet "enshittification" of course. The Italian term is apparently "Merdocene", a contraction of "Merda" [shit] and "cene", which is the international suffix to describe geological epochs [therefore - geologists might claim - is definitely somewhat exaggerated in this context]. Yet surely Cory will be captivating.
-
Carlos Moreno
(conference link) - Also Carlos' talk is about a straightforward topic: the 15 minute city. But in the context of Minister Matteo Salvini's recent road safety plan this is definitely to look forward to. [We are not sure he will talk in English, French or Spanish, let's see.]
- Bruce Sterling (conference link) - The title of Bruce's talk is "home-made utopias", and we don't want to speculate about what he is going to talk about, as he is known for delightful surprises.
-
Geert Lovink
(conference link) talks about how we should break the power of the monopolies and take back the Internet.
-
David Edgerton
(conference link) approaches the importance of storytelling on our perception of what is real and how this will influence governmental decision making.
- Wendy Hui Kyong Chun of
Simon Fraser University
(conference link) will discuss how algorithms discriminate.
- Harry Parker (conference link) addresses how the perfect integration of the biological and the artificial will change our concept of identity.
-
Daniel Cardoso Llach
and
Fredy Fortich
(conference link) discuss how artificial intelligence can be applied in the field of architecture
- Reinier de Graaf (conference link) explores the new language of green building.
-
Farrokh Derakhshani
of the
Aga Khan Award for Architecture
and
Francesca De Filippi
, director of the Centre for Research and Documentation on Habitat in the Global South (conference link) will explore the delicate balance between the use of traditional technologies and the needs dictated by an increasingly resource-hungry modernity.
- Thomas Mullaney of
Stanford University
(conference link) delves into Chinese technology.
-
Roma Agrawal
(conference link) explores how the nail constructed the world.
- Other international speakers, of which we are not sure they will speak in English, are

,
