Turn Your Job Search Around Instead Of Being Unemployed And Unhappy

Are you unemployed and unhappy with how long your job search is taking?

It's not just that hiring is slowing, and it's not because we're nearing the holidays.

You can change the direction and speed of your job search by doing things differently, even when you're unemployed. Or you can continue to do the same things, hoping for different results (didn't Einstein call that the definition of insanity?).

You're probably searching for a job the way most people do ... Applying online for many jobs, and hoping you get lucky. it's the way you've been taught by outplacement, most career coaches/authors, and the way the people you've paid to write your resume have been taught. You've been told it's all numbers game, that the more resumes your send and jobs you apply to, the faster your search will go.

Sometimes that works in strong job markets, if you get lucky. But it fails miserably during highly competitive job markets, like we've seen in 2023. That strategy especially fails if you have difficult job search problems, like unemployment, age 40, 50 or 60+, changing careers/industry/location, have long term gaps, a "bouncy" recent career, searching for a remote position or a raise/promotion. And it's causing you unhappiness.

You can do better than this, and turn your job search around. Anyone can do this, no matter your career, even if you were just ok (or even bad) at your last job, even if you were fired.

Here are a few ways to start:

  1. Show You're Better Than Just Qualified: From employers' points of view, qualified candidates are a dime-a-dozen - Today they expect 5-10 qualified candidates to compete for each interview spot (That's 50-100 qualified candidates competing for 10 interview spots). You need to show you're better than just qualified to even get interviews, and definitely to get the job.
  2. Create A First Impression That You're The Top Candidate: Most resumes attempt create the first impression of being qualified (which means average), and most fall short of even showing that you're qualified. Even if you're average, when you understand a hiring manager's needs better than your competitors, you can show an employer that you have exactly what they need.
  3. Show Employers You'll Do More Than Your Competitors: Give employers the perception that you'll do more than others ... by doing more than others in your job search process. Most job seekers think doing more means sending more resumes (Why do you think an employer care about that?). You can be smarter than that - You'll show you can do more by gaining better quality information, heavily customizing your resume, and doing more than applying online.

These are a few examples, but I teach many ways that job seekers can be more effective in standing out to employers, to overcome unemployment and turn around your job search.
