Turning circle - lost in translation
I’ve just been driving an MAN tipper with the Steering Brake option, and what a fantastic piece of kit it is. It basically locks the drive-axle wheels on the inside of a bend, so dramatically tightening the turning circle. It’s simple, but incredibly effective.
While driving it I was reminded of a funny story – well, I think it’s funny anyway. Some years ago I was testing a Ford F350 pick-up truck in Texas. On one occasion I attempted a U-turn on a reasonably wide road, but failed miserably on account of it having the same turning circle (and handling ability) as a cruise ship. While I was in the middle of what ended up being a five-point turn, I made it very clear to my female American passenger that my driving wasn’t at fault, telling her that the truck had a crap turning circle. She burst into laughter.
“What’s so funny?” I asked, red-faced, telling her again that the turning circle was at fault.
“It’s just that in America we call it a steering wheel!” she said.

6yMAN's always did have a crap turning circle, good to see they have done something about it at last.
