Two Months In: Surprises and Lessons Learned as a Clinical Evaluation Consultant
As I reflect on the past two months, I'm filled with appreciation, rich insights, and a strong drive to contribute meaningfully to the medical device industry.
Moving from a stable job to start my own consultancy was a big step, driven by my dedication and a clear goal to make a real difference in medical device companies and patient care.
In these two months, I've had the privilege of assisting four medical device companies, getting through their unique clinical strategies across a spectrum of devices—from class I to class IIb.
I've worked on a wide range of projects, including pain management solutions, interactive games for children's mental health, robotics, and devices for orthopedic recovery after surgery. Writing their state-of-the-art reports, clinical strategies, and synopsis of their clinical has been both demanding and fulfilling.
My Key Learnings for this month
This month has highlighted two essential lessons for me. Firstly, being open and honest with clients is essential. It's important to keep them in the loop, especially when their plans don't quite match up with what's expected by regulators. This way, we can make adjustments early on, which saves time, resources, and avoids disappointment.
A clear instance of this was when I advised a client to change their application strategy. They were hesitant at first, but after the strategy led to a successful outcome, they were thankful. This proved how important it is to fix issues before they become bigger problems.
Secondly, I've begun to adopt a new way of consulting that really involves the client in the process. By offering training and guidance, I let them lead the implementation with my support. This "done with you" method reflects my belief in strengthening the client's own team, and it's something I'm excited to develop further in the future.

My top Challenges of this Month
Handling many clients while keeping up with high-quality service has been quite the challenge.
But management software and automation have really helped, making everything faster and letting me focus on what really matters.
With my schedule full until mid-June, I'm thinking about working with other consultants to help with the workload.
Looking forward, I plan to keep sharing my experiences, the hurdles I face, and the victories along the way with all of you.
Being a consultant has its ups and downs, but the difference we make, what we learn, and how we adapt really show our success.
