Not a typical "we're hiring" post.

Not a typical "we're hiring" post.

Compass Point began nearly 20 years ago as my dream of helping family businesses – and the families that own them – to THRIVE as leaders, as companies and as a family unit. It’s not easy to start a business. Add in family dynamics and things get a bit more complicated.

A family business isn’t simply about making money. It’s about creating a legacy.

In the last 4 years, I have finally nailed down the 3 fundamental criteria for finding the right people to help grow that vision.

Are you humble?

This is all about leaving ego at the door and listening to what is being shared. It’s about leaning in even more to hear what is not being said. You can’t do that if you think you already have all the answers.

Are you hardworking?

This work takes EQ, energy and effort, because we are dedicated to our clients’ success. We carry their conversations and challenges with us. We are continuously learning to be better coaches and advisors.

Do you have heart?

It’s a heavy lift to peel back operational and emotional layers that have accumulated over years, even decades. The leadership team – family and non-family alike – need not only tools, guidance, and accountability to change course, but they need compassion and empathy as well.

I invite you to read a little longer and let me introduce our team from left to right in the picture.

Because their stories are why they make Compass Point successful.

Lizette Dubacher joined us in October and brings with her 20 years of experience leading teams in corporate America. She looks at our work with a whole new lens and is asking all the right questions of us internally. Her curiosity for how things work, her passion for people, her ability to listen and ask challenging, yet thoughtful, questions has proven to be transformative in client meetings and 1:1 conversations.

Cheryl Doll was Director of Organizational and Faculty Development at Lehigh Carbon Community College when she met Cheyenne through a leadership workshop Cheyenne was facilitating at the college. They stayed in touch and when we were looking to grow, Cheryl threw her hat in the ring. Her love of systems and organization has been a catalyst for capturing our own processes to ensure we can grow effectively. She has skillfully guided our clients to do the same. It’s been incredible to watch all the hard work that Cheryl has invested into becoming a very capable and astute coach, earning the trust and respect of her clients.

That’s me in the middle, yours truly, Tom Garrity. I had the privilege of growing up in South Dakota among our family’s businesses. Like many college grads, my path started in sales and over time moved to management. It was once I had a seat at the leadership table that I saw firsthand how success came with daily struggles. I wanted to do more, for more people, for more companies and with the blessing of my wife Denise (and 4 small children), Compass Point was born.

Cheyenne Bennett is one of the most pleasantly persistent women I know. You see, she too had a dream – a dream of being a leadership coach. She mailed her resume, emailed me regularly, asked questions about my work and came to a Compass Point book club more than once. She saw her role at Compass Point before I did! She has a gift for helping teams to open up, get aligned and build the trust needed to have crucial conversations. She leads with heart in everything she does.

Matthew Baran started as a humble Customer Service Rep in his family’s third generation business and moved through the ranks to become COO. During his tenure, he helped the company navigate successfully through a national and global merger. Once complete, he took a year-long sabbatical in 2020, driving rigs cross-country for a local family-owned company to figure out what’s next. It was during that reflective time he realized that his own experience could be valuable to other business owners. We were introduced through a mutual connection, and he joined our team in February of 2021.

The reason I share all this is because here are five very different people, with very different experiences, yet they all demonstrate the three things that matter most…

Humble. Hardworking. Heart.

If those 3 words resonate with you, I invite you to apply @compasspt.com/careers and share your story with us.
