UAE Leads Global Collaboration on Climate and Food Security

The COP29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit, hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024, brought together global leaders to address one of the most urgent challenges of our time—climate change. Held under the theme “In Solidarity for a Green World” and inaugurated by His Excellency Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, the summit underscored the need for collective action and innovative solutions to secure a sustainable future.

At the heart of the discussions was UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who reiterated the UAE’s commitment to accelerating climate action and building a climate-resilient economy. His Highness emphasised that climate action is not a burden but an unprecedented opportunity for global progress, reinforcing the UAE’s legacy of environmental stewardship and leadership in sustainable development.

A Legacy of Leadership

Building on the historic UAE Consensus achieved at COP28, hosted in the UAE last year, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed reaffirmed the country’s role in fostering international collaboration. The UAE Consensus not only set a roadmap for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement but also restored trust in the global multilateral system through commitments to financial pledges and climate funding for vulnerable communities.

At COP29, His Highness called for mutual understanding and a united approach to address climate challenges, urging nations to prioritise the greater good of humanity. This vision of collaboration aligns closely with the objectives of the Global Food Security Summit (GFSS), scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 26-27, 2024. As climate change continues to disrupt food systems globally, events like GFSS play a critical role in fostering resilience through innovation and international cooperation.

Linking Climate Action and Food Security

The UAE has consistently positioned itself as a leader in addressing interconnected global challenges, particularly the link between climate change and food security. During COP29, His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed highlighted the need for sustainable economic and social growth through innovative solutions. This focus on practical, actionable outcomes resonates with the agenda of the Global Food Security Summit, which will gather global leaders, experts, and innovators to explore strategies for building climate-resilient food systems.

By addressing challenges in arid agriculture, advancing sustainable practices, and leveraging technologies like artificial intelligence, the GFSS complements the UAE’s broader vision for sustainable development. It also underscores the importance of integrating food security into global climate strategies, an approach that aligns with the outcomes of COP29.

As part of Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Security Week, GFSS will provide a platform for exchanging best practices and driving innovation in food systems—an effort deeply intertwined with global climate objectives. Just as COP29 emphasises solidarity for a green world, GFSS underscores the need for collective action to ensure a food-secure future.

A Vision for Sustainability

The UAE’s leadership in hosting events like COP28, COP29, and the Global Food Security Summit reflects its unwavering commitment to sustainability and innovation. From championing climate resilience at international forums to driving transformative changes in food systems, the UAE continues to set an example for integrating climate action and sustainable development.

As the world gathers in Abu Dhabi for the Global Food Security Summit, the UAE’s role as a convener of meaningful dialogue and solutions will once again take centre stage. With its focus on collaboration, innovation, and actionable outcomes, the summit will build on the momentum generated at COP29, offering a unified vision for tackling the interconnected challenges of climate and food security.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed’s leadership at COP29 underscored the UAE’s commitment to a sustainable future through climate action and international collaboration. This vision will be carried forward at the Global Food Security Summit, where the focus will shift to addressing one of the most pressing outcomes of climate change: food security.

As the UAE continues to lead global efforts to create resilient systems, the alignment of climate and food strategies serves as a powerful testament to the nation’s ability to drive impactful change.
