UAE steps back from US CMF Gulf military alliance
The United Arab Emirates has withdrawn from a US-led maritime Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) coalition, a naval coalition tasked with minimising Gulf and Red Sea waterways trade conflict, said a statement by the UAE Foreign Ministry recently.
“As a result of our ongoing evaluation of effective security cooperation with all partners, two months ago, the UAE withdrew its participation in the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF),” the statement said, adding that the UAE remained committed to responsibly ensuring the safety of navigation in its seas in accordance with international law.
WAM, a local state news agency in UAE reported on the same day that the UAE is committed to peaceful dialogue and diplomatic engagement as a means of advancing the shared goals of regional security and stability in the Gulf region.
According to the CMF website, the organisation is a “multinational maritime partnership which exists to uphold the Rules-Based International Order (RBIO) by countering illicit non-state actors on the high seas and promoting security, stability, and prosperity across international waters.”
The Wall Street Journal in its report, ‘UAE says it exited US-led naval force’ writes, “Persian Gulf nation has expressed disappointment with American efforts to deter Iran.”
Officials in the Persian Gulf country were frustrated with the US’ inability to prevent the recent seizure of two commercial oil tankers by Iranian pirates in the Strait of Hormuz on April 27 and May 3, said The WSJ.
The UAE MoFA’s statement however cited no specific rationale for the decision.
Representatives from the US command in Bahrain say however that the UAE has not left the CMF.

“Bottom line, UAE is currently a CMF partner. That hasn’t changed,” said Commander Tim Hawkins, a spokesman for the Bahrain-based command.”
This recent decision by UAE fits into a larger context of the Gulf state diversifying traditional economic and military alliances.
While UAE is not a BRICs member as of yet, its bilateral meetings with the BRICs members of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa may lead to further drifting from Washington.
