UGC launches Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme

With the rapid implementation of NEP 2020 initiatives across HEIs in India, the University Grants Commission(UGC) has launched the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme, directed to foster ethics and moral values through a holistic educational approach for over 15 lakh teachers in the education sector.

On a social media post announcing the launch of the initiative, the UGC Chairman, Dr M. Jagadesh Kumar said,

“There are much better ways of becoming an effective teacher today, there are different kinds of training programmes available and the launching of the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centres is one such significant effort that we have taken up in order to make sure that our teachers are trained and they become effective teachers.”

How will the UGC facilitate the initiative?

Under the initiative, 111 institutions will be transformed into Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Centers (MMTC) where teachers will be trained bi-monthly in batches of 400 participants each. To accomplish this, the UGC is set to make all arrangements to bring the best subject matter experts(SMEs) across diverse subjects to train participants. After the completion of the designated training, teachers will be awarded with online certificates.

What will the training programme entail?

The training modules under the initiative have been specifically designed, keeping in mind the dynamic demands of the contemporary higher education landscape. The program will include  a wide range of themes, such as Indian knowledge systems, research, skill enhancement, delineation of learning goals, comprehensive education, academic leadership, administration, inclusiveness, the integration of technology, and evaluation.

Faculty members will have access to a comprehensive array of professional development opportunities through the programme. This includes short-term refresher courses aimed at updating their existing knowledge and skills, ensuring they remain current in their respective fields. Additionally, induction programs will be provided to newly appointed faculty members, offering them a structured introduction to the holistic culture, policies, and teaching methodologies that NEP 2020 seeks to foster.

Apart from this, firm emphasis has also been laid on the orientation on NEP 2020 initiatives that would further boost its implementation across HEIs.

What are the proposed outcomes of the programme?

Through its flexible and adaptive framework, the Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme is designed to tackle and effectively overcome the hurdles confronted by educators due to the significant expansion of the education system.

The initiative is focused on making a direct impact on the evolving educational landscape by enabling teachers to fulfill their professional development requirements and instill a culture of innovation, thereby fostering the development of innovative teaching methodologies that can elevate both student learning outcomes and active engagement.

End Note

The Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme represents a significant stride towards nurturing a more ethically grounded and proficient teaching workforce within India's higher education institutions, in alignment with the objectives set forth by the National Education Policy 2020.

By focusing on holistic education, innovation, and professional development, the UGC's initiative is set to leave an enduring impact on the educational landscape, ultimately enriching the learning experiences of countless students and fostering a culture of excellence in higher education.
