The Ultimate Guide to Resetting Your Business for Long-Term Success
In my 21-year career, I’ve met a lot of business owners, and I see the same problems come up again and again. People get stuck. They get stuck in a rut, stuck with a business model, or stuck with a formula they’ve bolted together over time. And here’s the thing: that formula eventually becomes stale, and worse—unmeasured.
I’m not saying every business is like this, but I’d estimate 80% of the ones I’ve talked to don’t measure their key metrics. Revenue streams, sales ROI, customer acquisition costs—it’s all guesswork for too many.
This issue falls into two parts.
First, there’s the reluctance to change.
You believe in your model. You think, “This has to work because it’s my idea. It’s great!” I’ve been there. Stubbornness can blind you, and I get it. When consultants were suggested to me in the past, I rejected the idea thinking, "They don't know my business better than I do!" But the truth is, stepping outside your bubble gives you a much wider view, and suddenly, your perspective shifts from narrow to 360 degrees.
The second issue is simply not knowing how to change.
Over time, businesses bolt on systems and people, creating a messy, inefficient structure. It’s like building a car engine with parts from different vehicles—it's not smooth or fast because it's not designed to work that way. Businesses are the same. Resetting and fine-tuning is often the better approach.
And I’m not just talking about operations. I’m talking about the lifeblood of your business—sales, marketing, and lead generation. Without growth in these areas, your business doesn’t move forward.
Technology has evolved, and so have business strategies. If you started your business today, knowing everything you know now, you’d likely do things differently. So why not do that? Rewrite your business model—it doesn’t have to be a 50-page document. A simple one-page outline will do: “Here’s what we want to achieve, and here’s how we’re going to do it.”
It doesn’t matter if you’re a solopreneur with time management issues or a larger business with a big team—you need balance. As a CEO or managing director, your role can quickly turn into one of just keeping things afloat, and when that happens, growth, innovation, and new opportunities are the first things to drop off.
