Sustainability Spotlight: UM students help Ecuador install sewers

Joshua Lomot is a sophomore at the University of Miami (Florida), and has been involved in Engineers Without Borders (EWB) since his freshman year.

Engineers Without Borders is an organization on campus whose motto is to "create sustainable solutions for communities in need."

For the past three years, the Ecudor project at the University of Miami has worked with Las Mercedes, a rural community in Southern Ecuador, to help improve the quality of life for all of its members.

Their first project, initiated in 2012, was a sewage system for the community. This project was implemented in 2014, and was a large collaborative effort between their team of 14, the community members themselves, and the local government.

This past winter, the team returned to Ecuador to do a monitoring of the sewage system. This required going house-by-house to ask the homeowners how their system has been working, and if they have experienced any major problems. They returned with roughly 200 data entries to analyze, and pinpoint the main cause of issues found.

In addition, the most recent trip was responsible for assessing a new sustainable park, to be located in the center of the community. This project will invoke as many sustainability factors as possible including: solar lighting, organic fertilizer and mulch, and water capturing techniques. They are currently waiting for the local government to go over the design and come up with a budget for the new project.

Joshua has taken over leadership of the Ecuador Project, and plans to continue to help the community of Las Mercedes over the next two years. Other team leads include Michelle Stanley, and chapter president Natasha Koermer.
