The Unconventional Guide to How Change Really Works

The Unconventional Guide to How Change Really Works

"Change is the only constant," they say. Well, if change were a person, they'd be that charming but utterly flaky friend who says they'll show up for dinner but then bails last minute.

Not cool, change. Not cool.

We've all been there—standing at the edge of the proverbial cliff, staring at the chasm of 'want to change' to 'actually changing.' The good news is you're not alone.

The bad news? It's not as easy as shouting, "Look, Ma, no hands!" and leaping off the edge.

The Fairytale of Instant Change

First off, let's banish the idea that change happens at the snap of your fingers, or that a magical fairy will sprinkle some pixie dust and you'll turn into a healthier, fitter, and more productive version of yourself. No, real change is not a bedtime story your grandma told you.

Imagine you want to shed a few pounds. Your ideal journey might look like:

  1. Want to change.
  2. Decide to change.
  3. Boom! Instant six-pack.

Dreams are free, my friend. But back in reality:

  1. Want to change. But also, want that double chocolate cake. Darn.
  2. Discuss your life choices with anyone who will listen until they’re bored to tears.
  3. Decide to change, but then realize it involves—you guessed it—changing.
  4. Kind of forget about it while binge-watching Netflix.
  5. Rinse and repeat.

Breaking Down The Change Conundrum

Compassion & Understanding

Don't beat yourself up. Change is hard, and it's harder when you're mired in self-judgment. Understand that it's a process, not a checkbox.

Structure & Support

Don't go it alone. Whether it's a coach, a support group, or a dedicated app, set up a framework that can help guide you. Friends who keep you accountable? That's gold.

Consistency & Planning

Consistency beats intensity. Set up a plan that's achievable and stick to it like white on rice. Even if you slip, keep the bigger picture in mind.

Let's Get Practical

  1. Start Small: Instead of aiming for a two-hour workout, start with 15 minutes a day.
  2. Daily Check-in: Reflect each night on what you did right, and where you can improve.
  3. Social Contract: Share your goals with someone, or even publicly. You're more likely to stick to them.
