UNDERGROUND NAIL SALONS
Bravely, I venture out in the daytime hours to get my mail. And having done so, leave the clubhouse and head down the sidewalk toward my apartment. I pass by Rita Ann, Mildred, and Linda lounging on an outdoor patio together, in chairs less than two inches apart. Showing no fear of getting coronavirus or giving it to each other.
I overhear Linda say to one of them, “Don’t worry, I know a place you can go to right now to get your hair and nails done. I’ll take you there.”
Under lockdown, nail and beauty parlors, along with bars and other types of businesses considered unsafe right now are all closed. But, the three of them are going to jump in the car and head on over to some underground beauty shop.
My moment of bravery vanishes. I move my cane and feet faster, back to the safety of my apartment, where I do my own nails and hair.
But I’m lying. I haven’t polished my nails in months, even before Covid-19. And all I do with my hair is wash it twice a week and brush it once a day. After all, no one sees me these days.
On this day, April 30, 2020, there were 30,357 new cases of Covid-19 in the US; 1,233 of those were in Texas, and 195 of those were in Harris County.
