Understand Your own Bias!
Unconscious Bias - A Reality In Todays Workplace
I lose count on the number of times I have lost opportunities at work, been rejected at an interview and not had my ideas listened to at work over my 30 year career, all because I did not "fit in" to a culture.
Feedback that is given to people when they do not succeed at an interview sometimes is a common get out of jail free card - " she/he did not fit in to our culture" and one always wonders hmmmmmm, what does that even mean?
What you realize it does mean is that you were not dressed right, or you did not go to the same college as the person interviewing you, or you were not the right nationality or color, or you did not give them the answers they believe are the only right ones to an issue.
Our Unconscious biases (we all have them) are a result of our experiences, our culture, how we were brought up and a whole host of other perceptions we form.
I will be conducting a training on UB for a global energy company next month and it is refreshing to see how some companies want to up-skill their staff and make them aware of their own biases and how they impact everyday decisions at work. How important it is to move from Unconscious Incompetence to Conscious Incompetence.
If I can help your Company and staff to become aware of a growing issue that is killing all your diversity initiatives ( you hire them but cant keep them) or you would jujst like to know more about the program please reach out. I promise you, your culture will thrive with innovation and psychological safety and decisions will be made with far more objectivity.

1moTalat Sheerazi Goldie Very commendable and well written Talat with versatility on such a taboo yet volatile topic..It is as an added note also unfortunately a subconscious bias that unknowlingly alot of professionals go through which somehow is partaken as part of ‘corporate culture’ norms.
