Understanding Adult ADHD: Rising Awareness and the Importance of Professional Diagnosis

At Clear Conscience Counseling, we see firsthand how attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects lives. Once primarily viewed as a childhood condition, ADHD is now gaining recognition among adults who may be struggling with undiagnosed symptoms. A recent national survey, commissioned by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine, revealed that 25% of adults suspect they may have undiagnosed ADHD. But despite these suspicions, only 13% of respondents have discussed their concerns with a doctor, raising significant concerns among mental health professionals about the risks of self-diagnosis and inappropriate treatment.

According to psychologist Dr. Justin Barterian, clinical assistant professor in Ohio State's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, it’s critical to differentiate ADHD from other conditions like anxiety or depression. “Anxiety, depression, and ADHD can look a lot alike, but the wrong treatment can make things worse,” Barterian explains. Proper diagnosis is essential because untreated or mismanaged ADHD can lead to ongoing challenges at work, in relationships, and daily life.

Dr. Barterian notes that younger adults are more likely to recognize symptoms of ADHD, often triggered by social media discussions that prompt self-reflection. However, this self-awareness must be channeled into action by consulting a mental health professional. As Dr. Barterian advises, “If you think you may meet the criteria for ADHD after seeing videos on social media, seek an evaluation from a qualified professional. Only a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or physician can provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.”

Understanding Adult ADHD

Adults with ADHD experience persistent symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, often traceable to childhood. However, these symptoms may intensify with adult responsibilities, stress, or life transitions. Adult ADHD generally falls into one of three categories:

  • Inattentive ADHD (ADD): Characterized by distractibility and difficulty paying attention.
  • Hyperactive and Impulsive ADHD: Marked by hyperactivity and impulsive actions.
  • Combined ADHD: Involves symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity.

The Challenges of Diagnosis

Diagnosing ADHD in adults is complex because symptoms can mirror those of other mental health conditions. “Symptoms of ADHD vary widely,” Dr. Barterian points out. “Some people may struggle more with organization, while others find social interactions challenging due to impulsivity.” A thorough evaluation by a professional can help clarify whether ADHD or another condition is present.
