What is Section 80D? 🩺

Section 80D of the Income Tax Act allows taxpayers to claim deductions for premiums paid on health insurance policies and expenses on preventive health check-ups.

Key Points of Section 80D 📝

  1. Who Can Claim? Individuals: For themselves, their spouse, children, and parents. Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs): For members of the HUF.
  2. Deduction Limits 💵: For Self, Spouse, and Children: Up to ₹25,000. For Parents: Parents below 60 years: Up to ₹25,000. Senior citizen parents (60 years or above): Up to ₹50,000. Preventive Health Check-Up: Up to ₹5,000 included in the overall limit of ₹25,000/₹50,000. Can be for self, spouse, children, and parents.
  3. Total Deduction Limit: If both the taxpayer and parents are below 60 years: ₹25,000 + ₹25,000 = ₹50,000. If the taxpayer is below 60 years and parents are 60 years or above: ₹25,000 + ₹50,000 = ₹75,000. If both the taxpayer and parents are 60 years or above: ₹50,000 + ₹50,000 = ₹1,00,000.
  4. Important Points to Remember: Cash Payments: Deductions for health insurance premiums are not allowed if paid in cash, except for preventive health check-ups. Family Definition: Family includes the taxpayer, their spouse, and dependent children. Policy Type: The policy can be for any health insurance or mediclaim scheme.

Examples to Illustrate 🌟

  1. Ravi's Scenario: Ravi (age 35) pays ₹20,000 for his health insurance and ₹30,000 for his senior citizen parents' insurance. Deduction: ₹20,000 (self) + ₹30,000 (parents) = ₹50,000.
  2. Sunita's Scenario: Sunita (age 40) pays ₹18,000 for her health insurance and ₹10,000 for preventive health check-ups for her family. Deduction: ₹18,000 + ₹5,000 (check-ups) = ₹23,000 (within the limit of ₹25,000).
