Understanding the unifying fabric of resilient retailers
Is digital the unifying fabric of resilient retailers?
The retail sector has evolved in the past few years, as more and more shopping has been done online. At the same time, customer demands for seamless digital experiences across mobile, web, and social media has also increased. With such a dynamic digital retail space, Priti Ambani, Country Head, TCS New Zealand, explores why digital is unifying the fabric for retailers to provide enhanced customer experiences.
The retail industry in Australia has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, with the rise of e-commerce and digital technologies leading to a shift in the way that consumers shop. However, despite the challenges posed by this changing landscape, many Australian retailers have quickly bounced back through adoption of digital technologies to deliver a superior retail experience. The pandemic has also acted as an accelerant to this transformation, forcing them to adapt more quickly to survive. While there are several ways digital technologies are transforming a shopper’s experience, there are also several technologies that are transforming the backend to provide a more seamless shopping experience.
Reimagining Supply Chain
Retailers have doubled down on their promise to customers by reimagining their businesses to not only remain competitive in the market but also become future ready. Rethinking the supply chain and logistics through technology has not only improved efficiency and transparency within the organisation but also impacted their bottom line by reducing costs through data-driven decision making. Technologies implemented reduce the time and effort of manual tasks and inventory management through automation, which speeds up delivery processes and reduces costs. This also provides decision makers with much needed visibility to the entire process in real time that enables them to take corrective actions along every step of the process and avoid major problems.
Back-end technologies
One of the key technologies retailers have introduced to their back end is cloud-based inventory management systems that manage and optimise supply chain operations. This tool allows real-time tracking of inventory levels and allows demand monitoring that has widely increased the efficiency and reduced time delays in supply chain operations. The move to cloud has also reduced the carbon footprint of the organisations and a step towards a more sustainable future. Artificial Intelligence (AI) -powered demand forecasting tools have enabled retailers to predict future demand more accurately for products. This allows retailers to further optimise their inventory levels, reduce wastage, and improve efficiency. Another technology that has reduced waste is 3D printing and automated packaging. Smart sensors are also embedded in packaging to monitor temperature, humidity, and other environmental conditions to avoid damage in transit. They package the product to minimise wastage of packaging materials by optimising processes based on size and shape. There has been a gradual shift to use recyclable and biodegradable packaging materials that are sustainable to the environment.
Last Mile Efficiency

Retailers have also experienced logistic transformations with technology that have yielded profitable outcomes. Technologies such as Transport Management Systems (TMS) has provided them with real-time shipment tracking and automated routing that improve visibility into their last mile operations, thus cutting costs and increasing profitability. The overall transformation of retailers has also allowed them to expand their scope for a wider network of suppliers through greater transparency and tracking which improves the relative ease and cost of procuring materials required to manufacture or source the products. They can also help these vendors become more sustainable through collaborative programs and commitments.
Lead By Example
Australia has been an early adopter of sustainable transformative technologies in the world with the pandemic forcing the retail sector to adapt faster than most other industries. With a large reach and customer base, the retail industry should look to set the trend for other industries to follow in its footsteps. Retailers in Australia need to keep the digital-first approach and cultivate a collaborative culture in the region amongst all industries as the path to a sustainable future in a joint endeavour.
