Unified Commerce and Fiscalization: Can They Coexist?
Is it possible to achieve unified commerce in a fiscal environment?
With online sales on the rise and new retail concepts and channels such as social commerce, live shopping, mobile apps and in-store kiosks emerging, the retail world is becoming increasingly complex.
Coupled with technologies such as self-checkouts, click and collect, pick and go, and traditional POS systems, the complexity of retailing is increasing even more.
This complexity reaches new heights when considering multiple countries with their unique channels, rules, laws, and consumer cultures.
As a participant in the retail industry, you likely already feel the strain.
Omnichannel strategies aimed to address these challenges by creating seamless experiences for consumers, but they often fell short because they focused solely on the “front end” means consumer facing points.
Recognizing this, the retail industry has shifted to unified commerce, which also addresses back-end processes like supply chain and financial management, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the retailer's operations.
Unified commerce is indeed a great approach, and many solution vendors are offering excellent solutions.
However, complications arise when unified commerce meets fiscal regulations. Fiscal laws, which are designed to minimize VAT fraud, dictate not only how sales and related taxes should be reported but also how sales processes should be structured.
Each country has its own fiscal laws, making a unified commerce strategy across multiple countries extremely challenging.
Even with the same infrastructure and solutions, sales processes can differ, causing 'unified' commerce to become fragmented.
So, is there a solution to this? Can we truly achieve unified commerce?
Yes, to a large extent, it is possible.
The key lies in separating the implementation of fiscal requirements from the unified commerce solution.
By keeping fiscal requirements outside the core system, their influence is minimized, making it easier to maintain a unified approach.
In conclusion, while 100% unified commerce across different fiscal countries is not feasible, you can achieve a near-unified system by managing fiscal complexities separately.
