Uniqueness of Aurofarm
Dr. G. Natchiar, a Padma Shri awardee and one of the founding members of Aravind Eye Care System, has made significant contributions to the organization in various capacities and currently serves as the Director Emeritus. One of her most notable achievements is the introduction of Aravind’s paramedical program, which, for over forty years, has empowered young women from rural backgrounds, transforming them into world-class eye care professionals. Dr. Natchiar also led the community outreach program, the cornerstone of Aravind’s high-volume work, and played a crucial role in initiating and scaling an innovative service delivery model for rural populations through Aravind’s vision centers and outreach activities. Additionally, she implemented a rigorous process to audit quality service performance and academic development across the Aravind Eye Care System.
Post-retirement, Dr. Natchiar devotes much of her time to farming. She manages Aurofarm, an 80-acre land certified organic by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Aurofarm is a testament to her unwavering passion for sustainable agriculture. Once a barren land, the farm has been transformed into a verdant haven under her guidance. It now supplies high-quality organic produce for the in-house canteen and staff, grown without chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers, using only natural manure and sustainable water sources. Each year, Aurofarm yields an abundance of vegetables, fruits, and paddy.
Aurofarm also serves as a residential and recreational facility for the staff of Aravind. It includes quarters for approximately 400 production staff and additional housing for other employees. The farm features various recreational amenities, such as a large swimming pool, a children’s play area, and a paved walking trail around a scenic quarry lake, providing a peaceful and enjoyable environment for the Aravind community.
